Guanacaste Province: Volcano Crater and Waterfalls Tour

Embark on a multisensory trek through the active Miravalles Volcano on this full-day adventure in Costa Rica. This tour offers a unique opportunity to hike directly inside an active crater, passing by steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pots. Experience the geothermal activity up close and immerse yourself in the volcano’s healing properties with a natural mud bath and hot springs soak. Your journey begins with a visit to Issys Tours Costa Rica in Sardinal, where you’ll start your interactive volcano tour suitable for all family members. After an estimated 2-hour travel time, you'll arrive at Miravalles Volcano. Here, you can observe the burners of the active crater, with volcanic mud pots reaching temperatures between 102°F and 212°F. Watch closely as fumaroles emit steam and gases, and see hot stones and crystallized sulfur. Take advantage of the outdoor "natural spa" with mud baths and three thermal pools, where you can soak in the volcanic waters. The tour also includes a visit to two waterfalls and Muco Cabro hill, accessible by a specially equipped tractor. Cross a 135-foot-long hanging bridge with magnificent views of the waterfall. Along the primary forest trails, you might spot a variety of birds and reptiles. The bubbling mud pools, with temperatures ranging from 175°F to 392°F, offer different types of clay for bathing. Choose from gray, brown, or yellow mud, each indicating different depths and sulfur content. After applying the mud, wait 15-20 minutes for it to cool and then rinse off, leaving your skin smooth and refreshed. The emerald green bubbling water pools, 6.5 feet deep and 212°F, are another highlight. The pools' temperatures remain constant unless it rains, and the water comes from the mountains, rich in iron and sulfur. Fumaroles, vents that release volcanic gases, add to the unique landscape. These gases, including hydrogen sulfide, create brightly colored rocks and intense chemical activity. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel, ensuring a full day of exploration and relaxation.

Andres communicated with me ahead of the tour so all travel arrangements were clarified. He also called to discuss options because storms caused dramatic flooding across the country, impacting roads, closing parks and the airport. He could have just canceled our tour but, he arranged for us to go the following day instead. Because of the historic storms and unsafe conditions we couldn’t visit the waterfall (closed) but we had the best day- and a very full day tour. Roads were still washed out with lots of potholes to maneuver but Andres drove safely and carefully while sharing tons of information about the area. At the tour site we were amazed by very active white-faced monkeys, howlers and spider monkeys. A baby sloth was a highlight! We made our own chocolates, coffee and pressed sugar cane into liquid. Lunch was at a fantastic local restaurant with a butterfly garden attached ending a very full day. Much appreciated Andres, absolutely recommend his services. Pura vida!

Seeing the toucans ( we had 4 in one tree, then more sightings of 2 in trees) were so unbelievably colorful!!!! The sloths were so funny to see as we saw 5 different ones. The rain forest was so lush, with rain and sun switching made it lovely! Loved the waterfall experience swimming in the fresh clear water underneath. Our guide Andres was so knowledgeable, we learned so much. The fresh coffee was the best I ever tasted too!! Such a fun day.

We really enjoyed the sky trek ziplining and virtigo, lots of adrenaline. They should advise warm clothing and rain protection. The beauty of the forest seen from the bridges is breathtaking. Wonderful 😍🥰

It was phenomenal! Melvin, our tour guide, and Diego, our driver, were wonderful. Very interactive and easy to talk to. Spoke great English. Great with kids.

Great! Fun and exciting. The location is beautiful.
