Full description
Avila is one of Spain’s oldest cities, and surrounded by well-preserved walls dating from the 11th century, it resembles an immense castle. The old quarters are home to a number of important Romanesque churches, Gothic palaces, and the city’s 12th-century Gothic cathedral, which is also fortified. On this full-day excursion from Madrid, you’ll see the exterior of the Avila Cathedral, the Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente, and visit the Plaza Mayor. Take a short walk through the city’s old streets to the Convent of Ste. Therese. Continue on to Segovia, a city rich in historical monuments. See the magnificent Roman Aqueduct from the time of Emperor Augustus. The elegant Cathedral, and its Alcazar fortress, the most spectacular castle in Spain, are among the highlights. Both Avila and Segovia are listed as Heritage of Mankind cities.

    Nice daytrip from Madrid

The female guide was extremely knowledgeable but ran the tour like a tight ship. There was no free time to roam on your own except for the washroom break and if you chose not to do the lunch option. You had you close to her in the churches and the castle as she moved around. For the morning visit to Avila, I informed the guide that I would like to walk the walls of Avila and meet up at the bus while my friend did her tour. She was OK with this. I enjoyed this immensely as I had already seen a lot of churches. The ticket is 5 euro. The Avila portion was very St. Theresa focused. There was no photo stop at the "4 posts" for a view of the walled city from afar which was disappointing. For Segovia, the aqueduct was the highlight. Not choosing the lunch, we were able to stay longer taking pictures and walking the stairs and a bit of the wall near it. We ate at a restaurant on our own, the traditional Segovia food: the bread/egg/ham soup, pork suckling and the ponche cake.

Gracias.
