Essential sights in Avignon
Avignon, France’s combination of religious prestige and a lively student and arts community makes it an incredible French destination. Don’t miss these Avignon essentials!
1. Pont Saint-Bénézet
There’s a lot more to the city than this famous Avignon bridge, but walking across it is a must. It’s the height of the city’s romantic history.
2. Palais des Papes
Located in the heart of Avignon is this magnificent Gothic fortress. Clear your schedule; exploring this gigantic complex will take the entire day.
3. Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon
Art lovers and history buffs will love this medieval Christian collection.
4. Avignon Cathedral
The Cathedrale Notre-Dame des Domes is simply gorgeous from the outside, but stepping inside will take your breath away.
5. Festival d'Avignon
Avignon in July brings a once in a lifetime opportunity: Festival d’Avignon, one of the world’s greatest contemporary performing arts festivals.
6. Musée Requien
This free natural history museum is simple and elegant. The best exhibition focuses on the reintroduction of wolves in France, but be warned—English is limited.
7. Eglise Saint Pierre
Wandering through this peaceful church filled with incredible art is a must do for Avignon.
8. Orange (small city)
Rent a car and head a half hour north to Orange. Despite its beautiful Roman architecture, it’s not a popular tourist destination, leaving the city fascinatingly eerie.

What people are saying about Avignon
Gilles was an excellent tour guide. He did the tour just for myself as there were not other people, and I have to say he made everything possible so that I enjoy my day. Excellent timing in every stop, lots of opportunities for some great photos with endless lavander fields. Some of the most beautiful towns In Provence are visited during this day ( Gordes, Rousillon, Sault, Fountaine ) and the lavander Ice cream at was the end of a great day! Also it was great that the tour was not cancelled even when I was alone.
We had an excellent day on this tour! Nicholas picked us up from our hotel lobby and immediately made us feel at home. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wine and the region and we both learned a lot. One suggestion that we loved about another tour we did s to have bottled water and snacks in the transportation (we each had small charcuterie baskets on the other tour), which was great between wineries. We will definitely book another tour when we’re back in France.
The tour was flexible and I didn’t feel any pressure. Also, there were only 4 of us in the tour, so it felt like a private tour of friends. I like that the guide was very particular with good hygiene practice to make sure to prevent covid-19. We spent a lot of time in the lavender fields and had more than enough time for photos! Plus we were able to visit historical towns in the region.
It was a great trip! Nicolas - our guide has done a really great job! He is very nice, funny and has a big knowledge about the Lavendel, Wine and a great knowledge of the area. We had also the Lavendeltour (half a day to Sault etc.) with him. I would definitely recommend my friends to book the tours with Nicolas. Thank you again Nicolas - it was a pleasure! :)
Nicolas was the best guide. Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Was an amazing tour for an English only speaking couple. We learned way more than we ever expected about wine and the entire process from soil to sip. We also learned about the climate of the area and history. Would’ve taken many more trips with Nicolas!
