I visited Auschwitz-Berkinau with 'get your guide'. For me it was a very sobering and overwhelming experience and one that I am very glad I did. Until that visit I THOUGHT I knew how horrific that time in our history was. I came away from there with the full realisation that I hadn't a clue. I can not and never will be able to comprehend the true scale of the horror that was Auschwitz. We can never undo the suffering endured by those people but it is our absolute duty to make sure it is never forgotten. We must learn to be kind to our fellow human beings and remember that it is kindness that sets you free-not work-as was the motto over the entrance. I highly recommend this trip. To anyone who is hesitating, I say DO IT. You will not regret it. Your only sadness-and it will be a great one-is that so many good kind ordinary hard-working innocent men women and beautiful little children had to die in the most horrific manner -for the ideals of a few.
Essential combined excursion when visiting Krakow. You will need the Salt Mine visit to lift your spirits again following the Auschwitz-Birkenau "experience" which is unbelievably heartbreaking & crushing. "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it"
It's a long day, but a worthwhile experience. The tour of the camps is quite quick, but if you stayed too long I think you would despair too much at the horror. Salt mines are an acquired taste - some of our group thought them amazing, others less impressed.
