Visit two completely different wine-making regions in New Zealand on this full-day tour from Auckland. Sample the wines and admire the spectacular scenery as you visit 5 wineries in total, on both the west coast and east coasts.
What to Expect
On this full-day tour you will visit wineries on the east coast and the west coast of New Zealand. Sample some of the local wine and admire the beautiful scenery of volcanic cliffs, beaches, and the sea as you visit 2 different wine-making regions in New Zealand. You will also visit both large and small wineries, providing an insight into the difference between the large, exporting, award-winning wineries and the more traditional, small local winemakers.
You will spend the morning wine tasting at a selection of 2 of the larger, long established wineries in the west coast region. These wineries grow their grapes in all of New Zealand's best vineyard areas, including Marlborough and Otago on the South Island, and Hawke's Bay and Gisborne on the North Island. This means they will offer you an amazing range and variety of top-class, award-winning wines to sample.
In-between the winery visits you will take in some spectacular west coast sightseeing of the Tasman Sea , including sheer volcanic cliffs rising from the sea, 50 kilometers of black sand along Muriwai Beach, and the famous Takapu (Australasian Gannet) colony. You can get as close as a few meters away from the nests of these elegant sea birds, which nest here from July to May.
You can then relax and enjoy the cross-country drive to the Pacific east coast through a variety of scenery including farms, forests, and small rural communities. You will travel a little further north through some seaside settlements where you can enjoy the views of small bays, beaches, and the ocean.
During the afternoon you will have a delicious vineyard platter lunch along with wine tastings at one of the small wineries in the beautiful Matakana region. You will also visit 2 of Matakana’s unique boutique estate wineries to sample their locally produced wines. In contrast to the wineries you visit in the morning, the wineries here are all small, family-owned, and only make wine from the local estate vines. You will be able to try some unique wines that are often only available at the cellar door.
