Go beyond fantasy and enter the truly magical world of Auckland's west coast. Immerse yourself in one of the only non-tropical rainforests on earth and walk on the West Coast's most stunning black sand beach.
What to Expect
Journey through New Zealand's Waitakere Ranges and you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a movie fantasy. They did lend a magical touch to the Oscar-winning The Piano and The Bridge to Terabithia.
Here, though, reality outdoes imagination. You will trek through one of the world's only rainforests outside the tropics. And the stunning black sand beaches hold an even more amazing secret: this unique mix of sand and volcanic iron oxide ash is magnetic!
Even before you reach these wonders, you pass through Titirangi ("fringe of heaven" in the local Maori language), which appears surprisingly quickly as you head west from Auckland. Nice cafes and bakeries draw local people to this rainforest gateway.
Once you enter the Waitakere Ranges, your guide will tell you about the local plants and animals. More information is available at the Arataki Visitor Centre, where on a clear day you can look back over descending hills to Auckland and Manukau Harbor.
Continue on to the coast and discover what many think to be the most beautiful black sand beach of them all. Your guide will explain the origin of this natural wonder amid the glorious, roaring surf that has played its part for millions of years.
Before you return you will also learn about the Maori's extensive use of native plants from this fantastic region for medicinal purposes, which they do to this day.
