The Acropolis Museum was initially conceived in 1976 as a response to the need for the conservation of invaluable Greek artifacts, including sculptures from the Parthenon. Completed in 2007, the New Acropolis Museum offers visitors an outstanding opportunity to view archaeological artifacts and learn about the Acropolis site. An ancient Athenian neighborhood is incorporated below the museum, showcasing life and human activities from the 4th millennium B.C. until the 12th century A.D.
The permanent exhibition comprises 4 galleries, which you will be able to explore with your admission ticket:
• In the Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis you’ll see findings from the sanctuaries there, as well as objects of everyday life from all historic periods. Transparent sections of the floor provide views of the archaeological excavation.
• The Archaic Gallery houses exhibits from the 7th century B.C. until the end of the Persian Wars in 480/79 B.C.
• In the Parthenon Gallery, the frieze of the Parthenon on the rectangular cement core can be appreciated in detail as you walk along the perimeter of the gallery.
• The final gallery of the Museum, Propylaea, Athena Nike, and Erechteion, affords views of unique works that became prototypes for subsequent periods from antiquity to today. See the coffered ceiling of the Propylaea and the sculptures from the parapet of the Temple of Athena Nike. In addition, the Caryatids of the Erechtheion are close by on the balcony overlooking the Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis. You’ll also find reliefs of Athenian decrees, impressive portraits, Roman copies of classical masterpieces, and depictions of philosophers and historical figures, from the 5th century B.C. to the 5th century A.D.

- Before entering you must pass through security check; please avoid bringing large bags or luggage.
- The cloakroom is located on the ground floor of the museum, where all backpacks and packages must be deposited.
- Free entry for citizens of EU countries aged under 18 years old on presentation of ID/passport. Free entry for all children aged under 5 years old.
- On December 24 and 31, the museum is open from 9 AM–3 PM.
- On the Friday before Greek Orthodox Easter, the museum is open from 12PM–6 PM and on that Saturday from 8 AM–3 PM.
- On March 6 and 25, May 18, and October 28, the museum has free admission.
- On the full-moon day of August and on European Museum Day, the museum stays open until midnight.
