Full description
Greece is a pleasure for the senses, and one of the best reasons to visit is its incredible food. From fresh-off-the-grill Souvlaki, to the traditional loukoumades (a delectable honey soaked desert), every course of food in Greece is an experience for the taste buds. On this 3-hour food-themed walking tour, you will get a chance to taste a variety of traditional goods, served by the locals who make them daily with their own hands. Any real foodie will tell you that your first stop on any travel is the local market. Here you can get a sense of what is to come, from the variety of meats, fishes, cheeses, and produce available daily to the locals. At the vibrant Varvekeois food market, you will see local vendors loudly bartering over their daily wares. On either side of the market are wonderful specialty food shops as well, inviting you in with their colorful and provocative spice piles. Here you can sample delectable nuts from the region, as well as figs, olives, and dates. You will also gain insight into the culinary history of this epic city, and learn the basics of the Mediterranean diet.

This was a great tour, even for those who don’t like tours. Our tour guide was Georgia, vivacious knowledgeable and entertaining, she had time for everyone. We told the ancient food market, rows of fresh meat, acres of fish, fresh fruit, nuts and spices, all fresh and beautifully presented. Tour was over three hours but not a moment was dull.

Lucy is a warm and friendly guide who is very knowledgeable about the history of Greek food from souvlaki to spinach pies. We had the opportunity to taste a wide variety of items from all over Greece. At the end of the tour, Lucy even provided a piece of paper listing the places we visited. It was a nice touch. Do note that the streets of Athens range from narrow lanes to cobblestones and uneven pavements, which may be difficult to navigate with baby prams and strollers.

This was one of the best tours I've ever done. It's the perfect way to see Athens and get to know Greek foods. The stops were high quality and our guide, Georgia Kalimeri, was amazing. She was funny, patient, so knowledgeable, and engaging. Tip your guide, people, especially when they're doing good work. Come a little hungry because you'll be full when it's over.
