Full description
Explore the UNESCO-listed Meteora monasteries on a full-day guided trip from Athens, the only one with an audio guide inside the monasteries and during the bus journey. Take the bus to Kalambaka and ascend to the clifftop to admire the monasteries and hermit caves of Badovas. Opposite the Athens railway station, catch the bus to Kalambaka. Having your audio tour available on your phone, admire the beauty of the countryside along the way and learn important historical information before arriving in Kalambaka, a small town built at the foot of rocky grey cliffs crowned by the monasteries of Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spot your guide upon arrival in Kalambaka, holding a signboard with your name on it. Be shown to the vehicle that’ll take you to the monasteries where you'll have time to visit 3 of them. During your free time, dig deep into the long history of these monasteries, learn about unknown and anecdotal stories, and explore the hermit caves of Badovas, everything along with your audio guide. Be transferred back to Kalambaka. Enjoy some time to explore the town and enjoy a light lunch (not included in the tour price). Afterwards, the bus departs Kalambaka, arriving in Athens in the evening. Please note that your transfer from Athens is temporarily done by an airconditioned bus departing from opposite the Athens Train station, instead of a train. The reason is that trains have stopped operations due to a devastating flood. You will still enjoy the experience in the most stress-free manner possible. Not only is the bus ride to Kalabaka efficient and a bit faster, but it also allows you to soak up the enchanting countryside of Greece. Awe at the gorgeous landscapes that unfold before your eyes and prepare yourself for the wonders of Meteora to come.

The excursion was good and the guide excellent, but with very disconcerting errors and variations compared to the confirmation and description on the Get your Guide site. Pickup was scheduled from a site near my hotel, I contacted you first via chat and then by phone as the confirmation sent by the activity manager confirmed departure from the Larissa station, so I at least asked for a refund for the return taxi to the station. I was reimbursed 100 euros and it seemed an excessive amount, then the train tickets arrived from the manager, second class, while I had requested since January, when registering for first class tickets, your Telephone Assistance he told me it was no longer possible to have first class. In the morning I showed up well in advance at the pick-up point indicated in the manager's email, but no one came. So we went to the Larissa station by taxi and so on the way back. The tour ok but the crazy mistakes.

Highly recommended doing this trip when you are in Athens. Yes, it is a long day (4.5 hours each way on train from Athens) but it is breathtaking. You won’t see anything else like it anywhere else in the world! Truly beautiful. Our guide Tolis was amazing, enthusiastic and could tell he loves the area and therefore his job. And our driver Konstantin was brilliant too, he doubled up as a photographer as well as a driver! 😂 Pictures don’t do it justice, it needs to be seen to be believed. Take plenty of water and food for the train journey. There is a buffet car but can be a long walk to it depending on your seats on train! Unforgettable day.

Maria was a very great guide, exciting story, funny anecdotes - you really enjoyed listening to her. Transportation was great, time was kept and included a quick stop for lunch. Danger! Women must wear a skirt or dress - knees covered - long pants are not acceptable. This information would have been great in advance. The monasteries and views were beautiful - highly recommended!
