Full description

Explore the UNESCO-listed Meteora monasteries on a full-day guided trip from Athens. Take the train to Kalambaka and ascend to the clifftop to admire the monasteries and hermit caves of Badovas.

Catch the train for Kalambaka from Athens railway station. Admire the beauty of the countryside along the way before arriving in Kalambaka, a small town built at the foot of rocky grey cliffs crowned by the monasteries of Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spot your driver upon arrival in Kalambaka, holding a signboard with your name on it. Be shown to the vehicle that’ll take you to the monasteries, where you'll have time to visit 3 of them, as well as the hermit caves of Badovas.

At the end of the day, be transferred back to Kalambaka. Enjoy some time to explore the town and enjoy a light lunch (not included in the tour price). Afterward, the train departs Kalambaka, arriving in Athens in the evening.

A very long but enjoyable day! We saw three different monastery and all were beautiful. Our guide was very informative and knew a lot about the history of the area. She was a local and it was fun to hear her stories about adventuring through the area when she was a child!

The train is long! But this was expected and really worth it. It’s very comfortable and there is a snack carriage if you didn’t bring breakfast/lunch with you. The e-tickets are very easy and once you are at the station you can’t get lost. The tour was very enjoyable and I loved the 3 monasteries we went to. I also appreciated the photo stops which were all beautiful and allowed for optional rock scrambling. The tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. The only reason I have knocked one star off is that the tour was a little slow to start. We spent the first 45mins at a Taverna which really wasn’t needed - snacks could be bought on the train and I was hoping for more walking. But once the tour got going it was excellent and the monasteries were beautiful. Make sure you bring a long skirt with you as some of the monasteries charge you to buy one! It’s a long day, but a great one. Very much recommend if you are wishing to explore more than Athens.

We booked a private tour which was great. Our guide George was one of the best guides I’ve ever had. He was from the area, very knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be with. His passion about Greek history was infectious. The churches and scenery were truly amazing. Pictures don’t do it justice. Had we known before and had more time, I would have traveled to the nearby town, which is charming, stayed there and booked tours directly with George. They do all kinds of custom tours to places the big tours don’t go. With spending a day or two there.
