Full description
Take a day out of your sightseeing in Athens to visit the awe-inspiring Meteora monasteries on this 14-hour excursion. Catch the train for Kalambaka at 7:20 AM from the Athens railway station and admire the beauty of the countryside along the way. At around 11:30 AM you’ll arrive in Kalambaka, a small town built at the foot of majestic grey rocky cliffs that are crowned by the monasteries of Meteora, which have been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. When you arrive in Kalambaka, an English-speaking driver will be waiting for you, holding a signboard with your name on it. You’ll be shown to the vehicle that will take you to the monasteries, where you’ll have around 4-hours to visit 2 of them, as well as the hermit caves of Badovas. At the end of the day, you’ll be transferred back to Kalambaka, and you’ll have some time to explore the town and enjoy a light lunch (not included in the tour price). I think this is the easiest way to do a day trip from Athens, and it is totally worth it! The description is not super clear on this, but you will arrive around lunch time, take a quick look at hermit caves, and then have the opportunity to grab food before heading to the monasteries. You will also be able to grab food upon returning from the monasteries.

I had an absolutely fabulous day on this trip. It was with some trepidation that I booked this trip as the reviews were mixed. However, I can honestly say this was my favourite day in Greece and the long train journey was absolutely worth it. Meteora itself is completely incredible, and was made even better by the very comfortable transport and highly professional, attentive and knowledgeable guide, who has lived in the area his whole life and had lots of interesting knowledge to share. He tailored the trip to suit me as I was the only one on the trip, and was so kind in offering to take photos at the viewpoints and stop off for refreshments etc. I felt that the day was very good value for money and that the train ride was surprisingly comfortable and straightforward. I stayed at a hotel near the station just to make things a little bit easier. The only problem was the company's insistence that tickets were printed rather than just shown on a phone, as I don't this this was necessary.
