Full description

Meet your licensed tour guide, who is also an archaeologist, then start your combination tour of Athens. Enter from the south slope of the Acropolis and set off on your leisurely walking tour of some of the world’s finest monuments.

Along the way, listen as your guide shares insight into the citadel’s ruins and excavation details. Visit the Theater of Dionysus, an amphitheater that is arguably the birthplace of performing arts. Continue with a leisurely paced stroll through the streets of Plaka, the old town of Athens. In this sprawling, historical neighborhood, you’ll follow along a maze of cobbled streets lined with examples of Neoclassical architecture, Byzantine churches, and busy shops. On the northernmost streets of Plaka is the area known as Anafiotika, an idyllic cluster of whitewashed houses that are reminiscent of buildings in the Greek islands. In the 19th century, homesick workers from the Cyclades built the houses and painted them bright white to remind themselves of Anafi. While listening to some stories about the area and its history from your guide, you’ll walk to the Rock of Ares, which is just a bit farther up the slopes of the Acropolis on Mars Hill. The colossal rock marks the site of the supreme court of ancient Athens. Kings from centuries ago are buried in tombs surrounding it. Continue to Philopappou Hill, passing the prison where the Greek philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death on controversial charges. You’ll also stop at the top of Philopappou Hill to enjoy breathtaking views over Athens. Sit down with a glass of white wine and enjoy a picnic of various Greek delicacies.

Kostas was recommended to us by friends who had toured with him previously. I would do the same for anyone looking to see Athens for the first time. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and booked with Kostas for our only day in Athens. His tour was incredible. He was a great conversationalist with interesting insights into the city. He also provided great recommendations for things to do after our tour ended. He truly made our day in Athens great!

This tour was amazing. To start the guide was very friendly, funny, polite, knowledgeable and with perfect english. The itinerary itself is fantastic because it takes you through Athens main areas but avoiding the obvious very touristic places where everyone knows. I go to see places where there only locals and i discovered a lot about the habits of the people who live in Athens. I highly recommend this tour to go beyond in your discovery of Athens.

Marisa really cared for the people in the group. There are plenty of sources for thhe ancient history of Athens, but she gave us interesting insights into its modern reality as well. I wouldn´t have minded more of the stair- and hill-climbing part, but unfortunately the composition of the group prevented that.
