This tour was one the highlights of two weeks in Greece. Maelle is an incredible guide and I learned so much about modern Greek history and rebellion over the last 200 years. I appreciate that Culture Hunters focuses on hidden histories (or, history that is not often discussed in most other tours in Athens) and contemporary political struggles. A highlight was the last portion in Exarchia where I learned about the neighborhood's struggles against police repression & gentrification to keep the anarchist, collectivist community alive. The tour was not just a recitation of facts and dates, but Maelle asked questions to get me to think critically about sites we were visiting, such as graffiti by street artist WD, in a way that was educational, engaging, and fun! Maelle also provided recommendations afterwards for places to eat and visit. I ended up signing up for the Women in Ancient Greece tour the following day due to how much I enjoyed this tour. Highly highly recommended!
I am interested in history and political movements, and I loved this tour. Our guide, Maelle, communicated modern Greek history with clarity and humor. Further, she brought empathy and insight. And she gave us personal recommendations for places to eat and things to see around Athens, beyond the tour. If you are not sympathetic to resistance movements of yesterday and today, then this may not be the tour for you. Also, be aware that you will be walking and standing for 2-3 hours. If you want to learn more about modern Greece and how Greeks have struggled in different periods of history, and if you want to understand Exarchia, then I recommend this tour very, very highly.
