Puerto de la Cruz is situated in the northern part of Tenerife. A tourist destination from the end of the 19th century due to its mild climate, it was considered to have healing properties. Today it also offers shopping and cultural places to visit.
What to Expect
Puerto de la Cruz, located in the northern part of the island, is where tourism first began in the Canarias, initially associated with the european elite interested in its mild climate and healing properties. Another important factor was the interest in the botany of the area. Despite being the smallest municipality of the archipelago, its population density makes Puerto de la Cruz the second most populated area of the islands.
The city offers a wide variety of possibilities: the Lagos Martiánez, a large bathing pool with water taken from the sea, designed by the well-known Canarian designer César Manrique; the Plaza del Charco, center of the city and main commercial hub; the extraordinary Botanical Gardens, with its large botanical collection; the Paseo of San Telmo where you can find in one of its ends the little hermitage of San Telmo; the colonial house Sitio Litre built in the 18th century, known for been a center for all kind of writers like Agatha Christie, or naturists such as Alexander von Humbolt, known for its quantitative work on botanical geography; and Playa Jardín beautiful black sanded beach.
