Arena of Nîmes

Begin your full-day tour with a pickup in front of Hotel Le Bristol in Avignon (address: 44 Cours Jean Jaurès 84000 Avignon) or around (contact me if you don’t stay within Avignon itself). Then we will go to Orange for a stop at the Roman Arch of Triumph for some pictures and explanations about the history of the monument. After this, you will visit the Roman Theatre of Orange with audio guides in the language you want. You will enjoy the picnic with local products from farms only and the Pont du Gard in the background (between April and October only), before walking around and on the magnificent Pont du Gard, a former bridge aqueduct. To finish, we will go to Nimes for a quick stop in front of the Maison Carrée, a former temple dedicated to the grandsons of Emperor Augustus, before visiting the Amphitheater with an audio guide in the language you want (between April and October only). Between November and March, the tour itinerary is altered slightly, offering you the opportunity to explore the sights on a half-day tour from Avignon. The winter edition of the tour does not include lunch and instead of visiting the Amphitheater in Nimes, you will enjoy a photo stop outside the amphitheater. Your tour comes to an end with a convenient drop-off at the same location where it began in Avignon.

Visit of the charming medieval town of Uzès, founded during the Roman era and the site of an aqueduct that was built to supply the city of Nîmes. The Pont du Gard is the most well-known stretch of the aqueduct left standing. On this 5-hour program, you’ll see the traces of Roman civilization in Uzès as well as substantial monuments from the Middle Ages. Visit the famous 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard, a section of the Roman aqueduct that provided water to Nîmes. The highly photographed bridge was listed by UNESCO in 1985 as a World Heritage Site. You’ll discover the treasures of Nîmes, including the Coliseum that is considered to be second only to the Coliseum in Rome. Its Roman amphitheater is still in use and today has a seating capacity of 10,000.

Welcome to Languedoc's Roman city. Nimes boasts a completely intact 4th-century BC Roman temple and a perfectly preserved Roman Amphitheatre in its centre. Here you will walk the streets and see the sights that were even used as settings for the Oscar-awarded movie Gladiator, all during our stroll across its car-free zone, charm oozing city centre. This jewel was first known as Nemausus, as the Roman Empire called it. Nimes is also the birthplace of a fashion icon: denim, which originally meant “de Nîmes”, or “from Nîmes”. This type of cloth was exported to the US during the early 19th century for the production of ship sails, tarps and workman's trousers. Then Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant, used it in 1870 to make trousers for the new frontier of the Wild West. Made in Genoa, where the name “jeans” comes from, with “de Nimes” cloth.
