Navajo Tribal Park Monument Valley Self-Guided Driving Tour

Navajo Tribal Park Monument Valley Self-Guided Driving Tour

Start by downloading the Action Tour Guide app, which will function as your personal tour guide, audio tour, and map. Purchase one tour per car, not per person. Everyone listens together! Note: This 44+ mile-long tour covers the essentials of Monument Valley in 2-3 hours. Your adventure into the stunning Utah landscape begins on the outskirts of the tiny town of Mexican Hat. From here, we’ll cruise across the rust-red land and crest the rise where Forrest Gump’s long run finally came to an end in the famous Tom Hanks film. This is where you’ll get your first really good look at the wonders that await. Then it’s on to Monument Valley itself. After we pass the visitor center (entrance tickets not included), we’ll learn about the mysterious Anasazi tribe, the first people who ever lived in this harsh place. They left behind ancient, advanced dwellings among the cliffs, which have been abandoned even before the Spanish arrived here. We’ll also hear about the Navajo, of course! This is their valley, after all, and the tribe has a long history here. Next, we’ll come to Wildcat Trail, the only self-guided trail in the park. From here, you can hike through some of the coolest sights the valley has to offer--as long as you bring enough water, that is! After that, we’ll see the towering formations of East Mitten Butte, West Mitten Butte, and Merrick Butte. While there, we’ll dive into the fascinating story of a silver prospector who tried to steal from this Navajo land. You can probably guess how that went for him. Our drive continues to John Ford Point, a gorgeous viewpoint named for the famous Western director John Ford. Along the way, we’ll dig into the countless Hollywood hits that have been filmed here over the years, from The Searchers to 2001: A Space Odyssey. We’ll visit the Three Sisters next. These monoliths loom 1,000 feet over the landscape and seem to defy gravity itself. Plus, we’ll give you some insights into the Navajo families who still live in this valley with no running water or electricity. On our way through the jaw-dropping scenery, we’ll learn more about the long history of the Navajo, from the dramatic tale of Navajo code talkers in World War II to the tribe’s modern presence in the country. At North Window Overlook, we’ll point out the perfect spot to catch a sunrise. Finally, we’ll end up near Camel Butte and Elephant Butte, where our tour will conclude.

Zion National Park: Self-Driving Audio Guided Tour

Zion National Park: Self-Driving Audio Guided Tour

NOTE: From March 3 to December 1, part of this tour will use the free park shuttle. The road to attractions like the Temple of Sinawava and The Narrows is closed to private vehicles during these months. Start by downloading the Action Tour Guide app, which will function as your personal tour guide, audio tour, and map. Purchase one tour per car, not per person. Everyone listens together! Note: This 23-mile-long tour covers the essentials of Zion National Park in 2 - 3 hours. This self-guided audio and GPS tour begins at the Springdale Visitor Center and continues into the park itself. As you drive, you’ll hear about the park's history and how it got its unusual name. Then, visit one of the best vistas for sunrises and return to a time when woolly mammoths walked the park—no, really! At the vista, we’ll point you to the impressive peaks of the Altar of Sacrifice, the Sundial, and the West Temple. They’ve all got imposing names, but I assure you that the mountains themselves are even more intimidating! After that, we’ll drive past the towering Sentinel and hear how a tremendous earthquake totally transformed this mountain. At the next viewpoint, we’ll see the Patriarchs, a trio of mountains so gorgeous that people used to think pictures of them just had to be fake. We’ll also get insight into how the local tribes helped name the park’s best features. Ever seen an emerald-colored pool? You’ll get your chance after the Patriarchs as we swing by sparkling waterfalls and the pools at their base, which turn radiantly green during certain months of the year. As we continue to Angel’s Landing, you’ll hear all about the struggle to preserve this park. When we see Angel’s Landing itself, you’ll wonder how anyone is brave enough to make the trek! This precarious, death-defying hike is famous for its staggering views… and the danger of getting to them. Suppose the landscape seems a bit dry for you; never fear! Next is Weeping Rock, a cliff face that constantly “weeps” and gives life to a little oasis at its base. Then it’s on to The Narrows, a one-of-a-kind river hike that’s perfect for photo ops. Then, we’ll travel along the Riverwalk and hear about the ancient petroglyphs left behind by the people who once called this area home. That will bring us to East Zion, home to some of the park’s most jaw-dropping vistas, offering breathtaking sights of lush canyons and watchful mountain peaks. When we head through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, we’ll hear the full story of the conflict between the Mormons and the Paiute tribe, and then we'll learn how an ingenious Mormon engineer figured out how to transport timber from the canyon’s rim down to its base with a complex pulley system! As we make our way to the East Entrance Ranger Station, we’ll admire the baffling Checkerboard Mesa and look for the park’s famous bighorn sheep. Our tour will conclude at the ranger station.
