This magnificent triumphal arch commemorating the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is a bonafide icon of the nation's turbulent political history. Here are five things to know about it before booking your tour!
Originally known as the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile, it was built in 1836 – 28 years after the much smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was completed closer to the Louvre.
Jean Chalgrin, who also did work on the Palais du Luxembourg and Versailles, unfortunately died in 1811 – five years after designing the arch, and 25 prior to its completion!
Every year on July 14th, the begining of the French Revolution is marked by a military parade from the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs-Elysées, to the Place de la Concorde.
French airmen, like the infantry, were ordered to march on foot to commemorate the end of World War I. Charles Godefroy protested by flying a biplane through it 3 weeks later!
After the Arc's vault became the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, military parades have avoided marching through the arch out of respect. Even Hitler observed the custom in 1940!
The Arc de Triomphe looks most spectacular at night, and the eternal flame that marks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is most visible then. At a height of 50 meters, visitors can climb to the top from 10:00AM to 11:00PM (10:30PM off-season), and gaze down the surrounding illuminated boulevards. Tickets can be purchased at ground level.
The Arc de Triomphe can be easily seen at the end of each of the 12 avenues radiating from it, including the Champs-Elysées. The nearest Metro stations are Argentine and George V (both line 1), Ternes (line 2), and Kléber (line 6). Take the underpass to the arch itself, avoiding the dangerously busy roundabout that encircles it.
The most difficult part was getting to the location to pick it up . It changed 3 times ! Took most of an afternoon to track it down. Kept sending us to different places ! Once we received it . It was very good . Immediate access to Louvre & Metro & transit . Wish we had more time to take advantage of all items the items &Opera house was included. River Cruise was great. Better directions to which dock would have helped. Stood in line 20 min to find out need to go to other place . Was also told by one person we could board at 3 different places , not true , only one place by Eiffel Tower. Please correct confusion about pick up & more detail about boat cruise.
Did a photoshoot for a surprise engagement. There were some last minute changes but everything still went very smoothly. Beks is an amazing photographer and would definitely have her do another shoot for us. We ran late to the shoot and she still stayed for almost the entire hour and did multiple different locations and poses. We LOVE how the photos came out and everyone we share them with say they are gorgeous. Highly recommend for anyone that is doing a surprise proposal or anyone that just wants to have some nice photos of your vacation!
Bus tour and water tour very good. Trip to Eiffel tower spoilt by bad information - we were told to go to the second level, see the sights, then go to the first level for lunch and then go to the top. This is not possible unless you can walk up the stairs from the first to second levels, which we could not. The only alternative then is to go back to ground level, exist the tower and buy new tickets to get back in - not an option! Otherwise a well organised tour and good value for money.
Alain was a true professional, made sure that he kept the session easy-going and comfortable. We felt like a friend was taking our pictures. Due to the inability to secure a large enough Uber ride to get to the Eiffel Tower in a timely manner, we improvised to the surrounding area and couldn't be happier with the results. Highly recommend using his services.
We were so tired after the Lourve and then walking to The Arc de Triomphe was not as appealing. If you have to do it in the same day because we are excercise nuts. Take a taxi! Stopped at a quaint Italian pizzeria - Rodrigo was amazing. Have us sustenance to make the rest of the journey!
