Full description

Walk for 2 hours to the summit of Pacaya Volcano and enjoy stunning views. Leave from Antigua for a 1-hour bus journey to the volcano's base before immediately starting your 2-hour trek with your local guide. Hike through wonderful pine forests up to the trickier volcanic ash section and finally to the sulfur smoking cone. On occasion, you can even see small eruptions and lava flowing, depending on the activity of the volcano. From the summit, you can enjoy great views of the nearby volcanoes, Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango, the pacific lowlands, and all the way to El Salvador. To ensure your safety you won’t be able to visit the crater, but you will get an amazing view of red-hot lava flowing and steam baths created by the heat of Pacaya.

Take a break and relax here as you take in more scenic views before hiking back to the base of the volcano, from where you will transfer back to your accommodation.

I did this hike with my mom, and we had a great time. Really well organized, excellent guide. I am often short of breath after recovering from covid, and my mom is 66, but the hike was totally doable. It’s about an hour of mostly uphill hiking, but our guide stopped every 10 minutes or so to teach us about the history and area and those breaks were great. Beautiful view at the top. No red lava, but it’s still hot enough to roast marshmallows! Great day trip from Antigua. Highlight of our trip!

Not too hard at all even though I’m a beginner hiker. Only hard portion is a 15-20 minute incline that’s pretty tiring. Horses available for when you’re tired. View at the top is thrilling but if you really want to see lava or be way above the clouds the 2 day hike is better

The pickup was just over 30min late and lead us to almost give up on the tour. We called the operator after waiting 15min and the guy seemed annoyed with us for bugging him (sounded like he just woke up) which was frustrating, but we believe it did get the ball rolling so if you have a similar experience I wouldn’t hesitate to give them a call. Aside from this the tour was awesome. Our guide Dario was very knowledgeable and friendly. He hiked at a good (albeit slow for us avid hikers) pace but it seemed better for the group overall. In terms of difficulty, I’d call it moderate, but they have horses you can pay to ride up as needed. The views were beautiful and the lava fields really cool. Other reviews mentioned chocolate and marshmallows which we didn’t get but o well, maybe that’s a larger group thing. Note that you can pay park entrance in USD ($15) or GTQ (Q.100), so consider the exchange rate, for us it was better to pay in GTQ.
