Experience

Highlights
  • Witness one of the most beautiful lakes in the world: Lake Atitlan
  • Journey by boat to the lake and its surrounding villages and town
Full description
Start the day with a trip from Antigua or Guatemala City to the Maya town of Panajachel. During the drive there will be a brief stop in Katok, a very famous restaurant where you can indulge in a hot drink. Once at Panajachel, it's time for a boat trip to cross Lake Atitlán and visit the Tzutuhil Village of Santiago de Atitlán. In this village you will visit the confraternity of the local saint named Maximon or Ri Laj Mam, visited by people all over the world who come to ask for health and prosperity in their lives. The lake itself owes its grandeur to its enormous size and spectacular volcanic setting. Three large volcanoes, Atitlán Tolimán and San Pedro, rise gracefully from its southern shore, creating breathtaking views around the area. You will experience these views and the traditional practices still carried out by the Maya-Tzutujil and Cakchiquel women who live around the lake. After a short transfer, we will have lunch at one of the most exquisite restaurants of Panajachel. While in town, guestes will also Santander Street and experience its vast, bustling handicraft market.

With a few words, just amazing!! Josue (tour guide) provided all comforts a traveller would imagine (and more)! Loads of information about Guatemala and lake Atitlan, went beyond what the service described. A very kind and well mannered individual that helped us on everything, literally. He will do whatever to support you. For us, during the return trip from lake Atitlan to Guatemala City and in order not to miss our flight, he arranged a second car to pick us up in the middle of the return trip (initially we were supposed to drop some clients in Antigua and then arrive at Guatemala City) and take us directly to the airport. On top of that, he arranged the transportation of our luggages from our hotel to the airport. I have not seen such a gesture before! Highly recommended and thank you for everything Josue!! Cheers and hope to see you again in the future!

I was the only person on my trip and therefore I was not provided with an English-speaking guide. I was travelling in a private vehicle and had a box to myself which was an advantage in terms of comfort but possibly detracted from the experience of meeting other travellers. My trip was scheduled to last 12 hours however it only lasted for nine. I feel that I have missed out on information that a local English speaking guide would have been able to give me about the village that I visited. The trip was extremely expensive and I subsequently found out that I could have visited three villages for a third of the cost with a different local company. The lake is very beautiful and the surrounding area is unique and the indigenous population colourful and welcoming. Definitely a lovely day out, but it can be done much more cheaply than advertised on get your guide
