Great day at Pacaya volcano. We didn’t want to commit to go to Acatenango for 2 days and thought Pacaya was a shorter and yet still fun activity. You still need to be a bit fit because the volcano is steep to hike. The drive of 1h30 was very smooth despite the curves and our guides were fantastic, always making sure we were okay and safe. Horses are available to climb too if you can’t hike. It was very windy up there so make sure you bring some warmer clothes during this season. The view was worth it. Highly recommend!!!

Full description

After a hotel pickup, leave Antigua to the base of the Pacaya volcano. Sit back and relax on a bus for the 1-hour trip. Upon arrival, begin the climb with a local guide, walking through a large forested area. Travel along paths of the volcanic area, appreciating views of the other volcanoes in addition to the regional vegetation along the way. When you reach the plateau, see the main crater of the volcano from a distance. Observe the lava depending on the activity of the volcano and some steam baths created by the heat of the Pacaya Volcano. After soaking in spectacular views of the Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango volcanoes at the summit of Pacaya, start the descent to the base, before taking the bus back to Antigua.

Hiking Pacaya was definitely the highlight of my trip to Guatemala! I was lucky enough to see the sunset there too and it melted my heart! Absolutely unique experience! Our guide roasted marshmallows for us too which was fun and the scenery of volcanos was magical! If you don’t have time to do the longer volcano hikes, do this one for sure and you won’t regret!
