Amsterdam: Life of Anne Frank and World War II Walking Tour
- Duration: 2 hours
You may have read Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl, but the truth of her words often doesn't sink in until you visit the secret annex in person. Before you visit this must-see place in Amsterdam, here's a quick refresher course about this impressive girl.
Many of Anne's diary entries were written in letter-form, addressed to Kitty. Scholars still debate whether Kitty was a pre-war friend or a character from Anne's favorite book.
There were eight people in total who hid in the famous secret annex. Otto Frank, Anne's father, was the the only one to survive.
Miep Gies, the Dutch woman who helped hide the Franks, said she would have destroyed the diary had she read it, since the contents incriminated everyone involved, herself included.
She heard Dutch Cabinet Minister Gerrit Bolkestein on the radio: "History cannot be written on the basis of official decisions... What we really need are ordinary documents."
The Franks hoped the war wouldn't come to The Netherlands at all. As the threat grew, Otto and his family tried unsuccessfully to emigrate to England and the USA.
From YouTube channels to suggested reading, you should be able to find a good tool to help you explain the story of Anne and her family to the young ones. It's suggested to bring kids age 10 and up, though all are welcome. Prams and baby strollers are not allowed inside, but there is a storage area available.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Amsterdam each year, and paying a visit to the secret annex is at the top of their must-do list. You can book tickets online, and even avoid waiting in line all together. It's also very easy to accomodate large groups.
Tickets and tours for the Anne Frank House are very reasonable. The admission price for children under age 10 starts at just €0.50 per child.

Aanrader!!
My husband and I had a wonderful time on our boat tour. The operators of our boat, Charly and Isabel, made it an Educational and entertaining. The did their level best to get all guests involved in the hour tour. Boat was clean, instructions to get to the boat were great and the staff did have all of us social distance on the boat as well as use hand sanitizer before entering the boat. I needed assistance because I have a broken leg and they were greedy helping me get comfortable for the ride.
My mum and I enjoyed the cruise. Tj was very friendly and pretty good at telling us about some history. It was a fun experience.
