What You'll Do
  • See over 30 big masterpieces by famous painters from the Golden Age
  • Discover the 17th and 18th century Dutch bourgeoisie
Overview
Admire over thirty huge 17th-century group portraits from the collections of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum in the Hermitage Amsterdam.
What to Expect
Visit the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age and admire 30 colossal, 17th-century group portraits from the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum collections brought together for the first time in the Hermitage Amsterdam. These works are unique and rarely seen by the public due to their size.

During your 1 hour visit in the gallery you’ll see portraits of regents, civic guards, and merchants of all ranks, social classes, and religions, standing together as brothers and sisters. Rembrandt's 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman' and portraits of Civic Guards including Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the works of art that will be available to view in the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Together they illustrate the story of collective citizenship that is typical of the Netherlands. It is almost as if they are holding up a mirror to contemporary Dutch society. The relationships among the people of the time formed the basis of the standards and conventions of today.

The Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age is open to visitors.
