Escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam and discover the charming fishing villages of Volendam and Marken. Enjoy a scenic drive past polders and little canals. Stop to sample typical Dutch cheese at a traditional dairy farm.
What to Expect
Enjoy a half-day private excursion to the fishing villages of Volendam and Marken, on the border of the former Zuiderzee (now Ijsselmeer).
The 4-hour tour departs from Amsterdam by air-conditioned transport, for a scenic drive through typical Dutch countryside of polders and little canals. En route, you will stop at one of the few cheese farms where cheese is still made in the traditional way. Sample some of the creamy fare before your depart.
Continue to the villages of Marken and Volendam, where you can admire brightly painted wooden houses, and see locals wearing their colorful regional dress from days gone by. The towns were once regarded by anthropologists and ethnographers as perfect relics of a traditional culture that was destined to disappear with the modernization of the Netherlands.
During the summer, you can enjoy the added bonus of a boat trip along the causeway, cruising leisurely from Volendam to Marken in the calm waters of the Zuiderzee.
