Full description
Get a better appreciation for art on a private 2-hour tour of the Rijksmuseum in central Amsterdam, and learn about the techniques of the Dutch Masters from a private guide. He will explain technical aspects of painting, as well discuss the hidden meanings of some of the works. For the average 17th century citizen, a painting was like reading a book, or looking at a cartoon! It was not just a pretty object; without school books and television, it also served as a teaching tool. History will spring to life as you look at paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and more, including Rembrandt's masterpiece “The Nightwatch.” Learn how the Dutch ruled the waves, following in the footsteps of the Spanish and Portuguese. Hear how everyone wanted a piece of art on their walls, and why the painters made their art much closer to ordinary people than was previously the rule. Pictures of kings, queens and emperors, as well as mythological and historical scenes, were still drawn, but common scenes from daily life took the spotlight.

Our guide, Rolf, was very knowledgeable and incredibly engaging. He started by discussing the architecture and history of the Rijksmuseum and then focused on the art and the artists. He asked us questions such as; what we noticed in a painting, how we would compare one to another, what we liked (or disliked) about the painting and/or the artists’ style ..... He really made us think and thus learn in a very enjoyable way. Also, the GetYourGuide booking process was very easy. We would certainly engage this service again and would specifically ask for our guide again.

Rolf was an excellent guide who was knowledgeable and passionate about art. He pointed out various interesting features about the artists, the culture of the time and different art techniques bringing alive the Grandmasters. My adult daughter, sister and 80 yr old mum all enjoyed the time. Rolf even arranged for a wheelchair for my mum to make her visit more comfortable. I feel that I have properly visited the Rijksmuseum through Rolf’s tour. Highly recommended!!

An AMAZING tour with Isabel — highlight of our trip!

Our family of 4 from the US (two parents, two kids, ages 11 and 12) splurged on a private tour of the beautiful Rijksmuseum and it was hands-down the highlight of our 2-week vacation. Upon booking, it was a bit confusing in terms of timing and meeting place but the contact, Rolf, was communicative and timely. Rolf wasn't available for the tour but our substitute, Isabel, was simply perfect. Friendly, engaging and above all knowledgable. The tour was well-organized and thoughtfully paced. She wove art history with current-day analogies that brought the art to life for our entire family. Can't recommend enough.
