The IAmsterdam Card is a great concept and makes things easier, especially when it comes to public transport. However, we had a very bad experience when getting on a tram in Amsterdam. Coming from a country that doesn't make use of QR codes getting on public transport, the tram driver was incredibly rude when the QR code didn't connect with their scanner. He called me stupid and when I explained I wasn't from Amsterdam, he told me he was speaking English. We travelled with my elderly parents and I thought that ours was an isolated incident, but unfortunately we were not the only tourists struggling with the QR codes not being accepted by the scanners. This is something that you need to look at, as it can cause a lot of anxiety in a foreign country when things don't work. Either the QR code scanners need to be updated or another way of scanning should be implemented. The rudeness of the drivers are not your fault, but all of that could be avoided if the process worked properly.

  • To use the city card, you will need to download the I amsterdam City Card App and register by using your unique CC code specified in your voucher
  • Activate the card only when you are in Amsterdam and ready to use it
  • Make sure to charge your smartphone to ensure you have access to it all day
  • Some locations require a timeslot. Timeslots can be booked in advance (before activating your city card)
