I purchased 3-day tram tickets for my wife and myself on-line which was easy to do and the cost very reasonable (approx. $19). Other valid ticket times are available. This was favorable as compared to buying a one day HOHO bus ticket for $24 and got me to many more locations. I did have to take my ticket voucher to the GVB Ticket Office which is located outside the Amsterdam Central Station in a white building. Be sure to get a map of the tram lines. Also, when you get-on and off a tram, you have to scan your tickets both times.

Apart from the fact that public transport in Amsterdam is more expensive than in Vienna, this ticket came in very handy. We only used one bus that we had to pay extra for, it wasn't from GVB. With this ticket, for the most part, you don't have to constantly wonder if you're traveling correctly on public transport - you know you are and don't have to worry about it anymore.

Because we were then able to redeem vouchers near the main train station (Centraal). To this day it is not clear to us whether this was the normal procedure, so a correspondingly visible notice when buying the ticket would have been helpful and would have saved us some worrying moments...
