Full description
Start your day by meeting your multilingual speaking guide/driver. Board a comfortable, luxurious, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan and journey through the typical Dutch landscape and polders, which are reclaimed islands from the sea. Cross over land that was still underwater until the 1950s. Make your first stop at Giethoorn, one of the most picturesque destinations in the Netherlands. Dive into the village's history, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Learn why it has been given the nickname ‘Dutch Venice'. Feel transported back in time as you explore the old center, where no vehicles are allowed and the only option to explore is by boat or on foot. Learn fun facts about Giethoorn and get some great tips from your guide about the local restaurants, shops, attractions, and activities. After your walk, there will be a rest break and you will have the chance to enjoy some apple pie and a cup of coffee. Then, enjoy a 1-hour cruise through the canals of Giethoorn. After the cruise, you will have some free time to explore the village at your own leisure. Your next and final destination will be Camp Westerbork Memorial Center. Learn about the camp's history during the years 1942-1945. Hear about how it was built in 1939 and how more than 100,000 Jews and Roma were gathered and held in this camp before being transported to other concentration camps. Understand what happened in the Netherlands during the Second World War at the memorial center. In the late afternoon, return back to Amsterdam.
