What to Expect
Explore the castles and palaces of the Greater Amsterdam region on a full-day private tour from the city center.
Transfer to the 13th-century castle of Muiderslot, built around 1285 and located 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam city center. Learn how it was part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, and take a guided of the Knight’s Hall, towers, and dungeon. Marvel at the collection of historic armor in the Armoury.
Continue to Naarden-Vesting to see an example of a star fort, complete with fortified walls and moat that makes it one of the best contained fortresses in the history of The Netherlands. Learn how the soldiers protected their surroundings in the Fortress Museum. Then, visit the 18th-century country estate of Kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn, built like many of the castles of the region so that the rich merchants of the 17th century could enjoy the good life away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
Discover a former palace of the Dutch royal family at Soestdijk Palace, used by Princess Juliana (Queen of the Netherlands from 1948–1980) and Prince Bernhard as their official residence until both of their deaths in 2004. The palace has been opened to the public, pending a decision about its future use.
Go to the 13th-century castle of Slot Zuylen. Although it retains many of its medieval castle-like features, Slot Zuylen was converted into a country mansion in the 18th century. The next castle on your tour is De Haar, the largest and most luxurious in The Netherlands. Look at the towers, turrets, moats, and suspension bridges, surrounded by old gardens and ponds, that give it the aspect of a true medieval castle.
End your day in the region of The Vechtstreek on the Vecht River. Located in the economic heartland of The Netherlands, the “Vecht” is renowned for its natural beauty, parks, and stately homes like Kasteel Nijenrode, Bolenstein, and Goudenstein.
