Cycling safety tips for a perfect Amsterdam bike tour

It sometimes feels like there are more bikes in Amsterdam than any other mode of transportation. Cycling is highly favored by the local population, so a bike tour is an ideal way to take in the city. To ensure fun, though, you need to take the right precautions!

What to wear while biking in Amsterdam

Wear a helmet and more importantly, don't wear headphones. To be alert as possible, you want to make sure you can hear all traffic around you.

Be aware of the fast pace

Locals often ride quite close to each other and quite quickly. Give yourself some time to adjust to the fast pace of the bike lanes, especially if you're not used to city cycling.

Follow the traffic rules!

Sometimes seasoned bikers in Amsterdam will run red lights and dart in and out of alleys without looking. We recommend you leave the rule breaking to the pros and follow all traffic signs.

Watch out for the trams

While you walk and bike around Amsterdam you'll notice that there's also a network of trams in the city. Be aware of the trams behind you as you cycle.

Use the bike path

There are different types of bike lanes in Amsterdam. Some lanes are on street level and you'll be riding next to cars and others are on the sidewalk. Generally, there are symbols so you'll know which lane is yours. Make sure to follow the direction of traffic as most bike lanes are one-way.

Planning Your Visit

When is the best time to cycle in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam's locals cycle year round and it is one of the best ways to get around this city. We would recommend avoiding biking only when it's raining, as the roads can be quite slick.

Do I need to wear a Helmet?

Most cyclists in Amsterdam actually don't wear a helmet and car drivers are quite aware of bikers. However, if you are out of practice or simply nervous, we recommend wearing some protective headgear.

What People Are Saying About Amsterdam

wonderful way to get a sense of the real Amsterdsm

Jasper gave us a generous and warm tour of his hometown, demonstrating his very broad and impressive knowledge on all manner of things relating to Amsterdam. He was inclusive and welcoming and I very much recommend the tour - it was the best thing we did in Amsterdam and we loved our whole stay, so high praise.

The guided cycle tour was a highlight of our visit to Amsterdam.

The local tour guide was very informative and pleasant. We weren't sure about cycling through the city with all the busy activity of cars and bikes but it was really easy. The bikes were comfortable to ride for both my wife and I. We would definitely recommend this for a great way to see the city. Thanks.

Good mix of sight seeing from a bike being given interesting facts.

Only 6 on our trip so had the personal touch. Bikes were modern and adjusted to individuals needs. It was raining at the scheduled start so all agreed a slight delay would ensure bike riding in the dry, which was appreciated. Our guide was excellent making the 3 hours both intesresting and fun. The refreshment stop at the cafe was relaxing and picturesque. The visit to the clog and cheese farm was interesting and amusing. We decided at the end of the tour that the only way to see Amsterdam and its countryside was on a bike!

Wonderful tour to see all over Amsterdam

Tour guide was excellent and it was a great tour to see various areas of Amsterdam and learn some history of the city.
