Our hosts were a family run business, we were shown on a map where we would travel to search for the lights, great commentary throughout the trip with nice personal stories. We saw the lights, amazing, had great hot chocolate and cakes around a camp fire, the whole trip was perfect, all in small group transport. Fabulous hosts.

It was an amazing tour! We started in cloudy and rainy weather, we practically had no chance. Then some stars appeared, the sky cleared and by the time we drank the hot chocolate, the miracle began! Thank you very much, a dream come true!

Full description

Join this tour and get in on the excitement of hunting for Northern Lights in the beautiful landscapes of the Alta Fjord. Meet your experienced guides who can show you how to best spot the Northern Lights. This tour comes with an 80-90% chance of seeing this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Each of our Northern Lights tours is different, as we focus on finding the optimal place with the greatest chance of seeing the lights. We therefore sometimes have to drive quite far to find them, while sometimes we find them in the surrounding area. Necessary driving distance decide whether we establish a camp with a fire, or whether we serve hot chocolate and snacks (alternative to vegans, etc.) at one of our short stops.

While enjoying the great outdoors and waiting for the green lady, we will share with you local stories about Norwegian way of living and the local history from the Stone Age, Sami culture, reindeer-herding, wildlife, Second World War and the modern society in Alta and Finnmark. We are normally back in Alta Center just over midnight.

Know before you go

  • It is recommended to have dinner before the trip.
  • Be aware that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and therefore we cannot be guaranteed that you will see it. Anyway, our guide will do his best to find them driving to the right place due to weather conditions and KP value (strenght of solar winds).
  • You should know that pictures often show the colors of the northern lights stronger than how they are seen with the naked eyes.
  • To enjoy the northern lights, you spend long periods outdoors, in very cold winter conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that you use very warm layers, preferably wool. We will provide you outdoor clothes and boots.
  • The trip is arranged regardless of the weather.
  • The trip is only canceled due to dangerous weather and/or driving conditions.
  • Choose Alta Havn (Alta Harbour) as your pick up place if you are coming to Alta by cruise ship. Our guide will be there looking for you at the parking place with a black minibus.

Our guide Steven was amazing! He was at the right time for pickup and drived us to three places to spot the Northern lights though it was visible for us from the first spot itself. He took pictures of our group members for northern lights portraits. He was providing us information about in and around Alta throughout our journey. And to our luck we saw Northern Lights in all possible colours. Steven also gave us hot chocolate and some delicious pastries. All in all it was an awesome tour and i would recommend everyone to do it!
