Explore the unique landscape of the West MacDonnells on a full-day excursion from Alice Springs. Experience the dry riverbeds, vast craggy ocher red sandstone gaps and gorges, and tranquil waterholes that make up the spectacular landscape of the area.
What to Expect
Heading west from Alice Springs on Larapinta Drive, alongside the ocher-colored mountains, you’ll come to the West MacDonnell Ranges, where you’ll discover a hidden oasis.
Visit Standley Chasm, a deep red cleft that glows in the reflected sunlight. You’ll walk into the Chasm along the Angkerle Creek bed, and stop for morning tea.
You’ll also make a stop at Simpsons Gap, characterized by rich ocher-colored rock walls rising from a sandy creek bed. At Ellery Creek Big Hole, you’ll enjoy a short walk along a creek bed to a waterhole below the steep rocky escarpment. A refreshing swim in the cool water may be possible depending on the time of year!
