Enjoy a peaceful walking tour through the saltpans of Tavira. Learn about the history of man's extraction of "white gold" -- the salt that is still produced in this area. Keep your eyes peeled for beautiful birds and wildlife in this beautiful land
What to Expect
The southern tip of Portugal makes you feel as if you're standing on the edge of the world.
We'll begin our walk with a look out over the islands of Tavira and Cabanas, where you can have a look at the incredible saltpans of the Algarve. These centuries-old saltpans are still a working area where famously fine salt is extracted in a traditional and sustainable way. Your guide will teach you the process, while explaining to you some interesting facts about the past productions through the centuries.
As we continue our walk along the saltpans, keep your eyes open for the colorful flamingos and other species of birds who call this land home. The protected environment allows for a diverse and unique population of birds, and your guide will help point out the most interesting to you.
On our way back to the Arraial Ferreira Neto, we'll explore this protected marshland and learn more about the "white gold" of the area -- the salt that makes this land so important to the communities here. Your guide is here to answer your questions, and you'll be amazed by the history and beauty of this incredible village of fisherman!
