Explore Antalya on a full-day tour that begins with a visit to the Roman-era Aspendos Theater, a venue seating 15,000 spectators. Discover Kaleiçi, the ancient center, on a guided walk along its narrow, winding streets, and see the historic Clock Tower.
What to Expect
Your full-day guided tour of Antalya begins with a drive to the ancient Aspendos Theater, where events attended by thousands of spectators were held in Roman times. The theater is still in use today, which is a testament to the success of the original design.
Nearby are the ruins of a basilica, the agora, and one of the largest aqueducts in Anatolia. Visitors typically see only see the theater, but a visit to the aqueduct is recommended.
Kaleiçi, the old city, is enclosed by ancient walls that now protect this peaceful area from the noise and activity of modern Antalya. In the northern part of the quarter you’ll find shops and restaurants lining the narrow maze-like streets. You can enter the old city by the Hadrian Gate, built by the Roman emperor Hadrianus as the main entrance to the city.
In Kaleiçi, the Clock Tower is the only structure of its type that has survived from the original 80 towers of the citadel that surrounded the city of Antalya.
Dating back to the 2nd century A.D. the 2-story tower is situated on the cliffs, and features a square lower floor plan, while the upper floor is circular. This tower’s function has never been clearly understood, but it may have served as a lighthouse or even a mausoleum.
At the end of the tour if you’d like to shop for some bargains your guide will be happy to arrange this for you.
