We had a great time not only learning and preparing local food, attending a coffee ceremony and roasting our own beans and having a glass of delicious honey wine, but also learning about the city, the culture and visiting a huge market where you can find basically everything, food and non food.

While immersing yourself deep into the culture of Ethiopia, your taste buds will have a busy day in Addis Ababa.

To jumpstart your day, we will make a stop at a Tomoca Coffee shop for a unique taste of Italian-style coffee and macchiato made with Ethiopian arabica beans. As you visit Africa’s largest open air market, Merkato, you will put your bargaining skills to test with the savvy spice dealers. You will be presented with the challenge of baking the spongy injera bread. We will demonstrate step by step Ethiopia's unique coffee ceremony. Your tour will conclude with a tour of a local Ethiopian honey-wine ("Tej") bar, where you will have the opportunity to taste samples. Tej is a traditional Ethiopian honey wine that shares similarities with mead, being primarily made from fermented honey

You will have a buffet-style lunch at the oldest hotel, with samplings of the popular dishes.

Desale was our guide and was super knowledgeable about all aspects of Ethiopia and answered all our questions. Our first stop was to Merkato open air market where we saw lots of different local spices and coffee being sold. Next we learnt to bake injera bread and were able to try our creations with the typical spice. We visited a local coffee shop and participated in a traditional coffee ceremony, the coffee was amazing!! For lunch we had a local vegetarian buffet and were able to try a variety of dishes. Lastly, we visited a honey wine bar and tried honey wine for the first time. While driving Desale pointed out all the interesting landmarks and knew all the history of the areas. We highly recommend this for any food enthusiast!
