When booking, you can choose from 4 seating options Climb aboard a purpose-built catamaran that departs from Strahan Wharf and heads towards Hells Gates, the narrow-channel entrance to Macquarie Harbor. Pass ocean trout and Atlantic salmon farms en-route to Sarah Island. Take a 1-hour guided tour of the island to learn about the harsh conditions of Tasmania's first penal settlement. From Sarah Island, travel into the majestic world heritage listed Gordon River. Rediscover serenity while gliding deep into the ancient rainforest. Really enjoyable day. The food served was delicious and every team member was so friendly and helpful. I was glad I took lots of layers so I could walk around outside on the cruise and take wonderful photos rain or shine then head back indoors to the best coffee, warmth and a comfortable seat. If you do have a seat preference I recommend checking which seat you are allocated as you check in early and collect your tickets which is done before boarding. To help with motion sickness I prefer right beside the window so I had to do a quick dash back to the ticket booth to change seats. Lucky for me the boat was not full and the team accommodated my request. I love that the big red boat is family owned and run - 3 generations I believe driving the boat. Wow. They all have such a wonderful respect of the area, the environment and the privilege they have working on it every day. Big thank you to the whole big red boat team an exceptional day.

A fabulous day not to be missed! Everything from the boat to the staff, the information, the food to the onshore side excursions were fabulous. This really opened our eyes to early experiences in the area….the treatment of the aborigines , conditions experienced on the penal colony of Sarah Island and the fight to save the Gordon River from the proposed dam. All information delivered in a very entertaining way that had you hanging on every word. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
