Full description
This tour consists of a pleasant walk around the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the ashes of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Your tour will be conducted in English, and will cater only to a small group with a maximum of 15 people. During the infamous eruption, Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried by tons of pumice and volcanic ash, which preserved many things and materials in amazing conditions. Following your tour in Pompeii, you will have time to grab some lunch, or to stroll through the souvenir shops outside the ruins. Afterwards, take the Circumesuviana train leading to Ercolano (a 20 minute trip), where you will start your walk through the ruins. There, discover that Herculaneum is much smaller, but better preserved than Pompeii. While Pompeii had been covered in four meters of ashes, an avalanche of mud 20 meters thick had buried Herculaneum. Second floors of the buildings, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings, and mosaics are still preserved and on display. The site gives a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle which was enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Roman Empire.

    Michaela was amazing!

Michaela was a fantastic guide. It was a real treat having a real archaeologist who has been involved in the excavation of this amazing site, to be guiding us through it’s history and wonders. I was really pleased Herculaneum was also included in the tour - it was difficult to find tours that covered both sites. This tour did not disappoint. Highly recommend.

    Highly Recommended!

Rafaele took us through Pompeii and Ercolano. You can see his own enthusiasm and pride in these ancient sites. As an archaeologist, he has the background knowledge to convey life and events at that time. It was very exciting to listen to him, even if it is a lot of input in one day. He has understood how to awaken sensitivity to the tragedy that has overtaken people. We never had the feeling that he was rushing to finish on time. The information was detailed and he answered all questions very patiently. We can only recommend the tour!

Great tour for seeing the key points of each site. If you want to be able to take your time and take it all in at each location, you’re probably better off going back on your own. It’s a bit of a whistle stop hotspot tour. Herculaneum is amazing, smaller and better preserved sites generally as well as being significantly quieter so you get a chance to really get an idea of the scale of the catastrophe, the human impact and the lives leading up to the eruption. Our guide was an archaeologist and had done some field work and project work at Pompeii and was able to give an amazing insight on a number of topics around both sites. Would highly recommend this joint tour in peak season to make the most of time and see the highlights of Pompeii when there are vast numbers of other groups and visitors on site.
