Full description
Wander through the narrow streets of Chiado and take in the views from atop the Santa Justa Lift. See how the locals live in Bairro Alto and admire the azulejos (painted ceramic tilework) that adorn the buildings of the Portuguese capital.  The first stop on the tour is Pedro IV square, also known as Rossio. Here, learn how the city of Lisbon came to be and visit the Jewish memorial commemorating the massacre that took place in this area 500 years ago. Follow the winding streets up to Chiado, where you will have the opportunity to climb the Santa Justa Lift, a famous landmark in downtown Lisbon.  Visit Carmo Square and Convent, reminders of the devastation left by the 1755 earthquake, and pass by Bertrand, said to be the oldest bookshop in the world. Take a look at the São Roque Church before pausing for a quick break and continuing up to Lisbon's Bairro Alto. Spot locals hanging their laundry out to dry in the narrow alleyways and keep an eye out for the iconic trams that make their way through Lisbon's streets.  The walk finishes in Camões Square, where you can take photos with one of the most famous Portuguese writers and try the typical pásteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) or Ginga (cherry liquor) in a nearby café.

Our guide was fantastic! We learned so much about the history of Lisboa that a Portuguese friend on Facebook was amazed at how much we knew about his city.
