Full description
With this access, learn more about how King Manuel I commissioned the monastery in 1496 to honor the Infante for his devotion to Our Lady and faith in St. Jerome. Discover how the monastery of St. Mary of Belém was donated to the monks of the Order of St. Jerome. For this reason, it is commonly known as the Jerónimos Monastery. This national monument was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is located near the city of Lisbon, next to the Tagu River. In 1833, when the order was dissolved, the monastery was used as a school and orphanage until 1940. In the 19th century, the church became the monument for local heroes and poets such as Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama. Come and discover what is not simply a notable work of architecture, but also an important part of Portuguese identity and culture.

Getting the ticket from the museum was easy. You go to the desk just inside the entrance, so don't join the ticket queue there. Then you walk a couple of minute to the monastery and you don't have to queue there either. The monastery is very interesting if you like old buildings. The museum is worth a visit too. Lots of interesting archaeological artefacts, including prehistoric, roman and medieval .

AWESOME! Definitely get the fast track ticket to avoid the line.

An amazing place with huge historical interest and the prettiest architecture in Portugal. A definite must! The fast track ticket saved me 45 minutes of waiting in the long line in the rain. I got there at opening time and was able to have a terrific time before the cruise ship people flocked in.

fast :-)

It should be specified in trip explanation that you go direct to the entrance of the Monastry (where all people are standing in horrible line) bypass them and go to the security person. He will look at your printed page and let you in to the ticket control. We got in in 2 minutes where other people had line for at least 2 hours. Monastery is beautiful as a must see, unique. Entrance to the church is for free and you approach it from the same place u entered monastery.
