Full description
Start your food tour of Bologna at the Fountain of Neptune on Piazza Maggiore, and set off to experience 5 authentic tastings (enough for a big meal) at a diverse set of venues. Stroll in a small group for a more intimate experience and visit the city's oldest market full of historical, family-run stores. Expect to eat enough food that, for most people, will negate the need for lunch afterwards! Follow entertaining local guides and hear stories that will give you an insight into Bologna’s traditions and culture along the way. Savor a delicious torta di riso (rice cake) in the city's oldest bakery. Enjoy a fresh pasta workshop, where you will have the chance to see veteran pasta artisans at work!  Feast on cured meats and cheeses, such as Parmigiano Reggiano with balsamic vinegar, Mortadella, Salame di Felino, Caciotta and Prosciutto di Parma with typical breads and local wine at a typical delicatessen. Visit a pasta laboratory to taste their homemade egg pasta, and end with an authentic Italian gelato at a gelateria.

We enjoyed this tour but it could definitely be better, especially for the price point. Our guide was friendly, knowledgable, organised and kept the tour flowing well. We particularly enjoyed the explanations about the history of the food and how its made etc. - even as an Italian, I learned things! The food choices were mostly excellent and authenticly Bolognese: cold cuts, cheese, wine, pasta and the BEST ice cream I've ever eaten. I think the chocolate shop was a weak point however - boring and crowded! Unfortunately the group size (~ 15 guests) was definitely too big to really enjoy the tour. All guests couldn't fit into some of the shops at one time (so had to wait outside!), or properly see/hear the guide (a radio was provided but it didn't work). In this price range, I expected a smaller group size and a more personalised experience - even just facilitating simple introductions at the start of the tour to encourage the group to chat. It was a little too perfunctory.

Great tour

This was one of the best food and wine tours I have ever been on. Our guide, Fabio, was absolutely delightful and kept us entertained for the whole tour. He was very knowledgeable not just about the local food but Bologna itself. When I booked the tour, I did think it was a little expensive but the amount of food we had was amazing. I certainly did not need dinner that night. When I bring my husband back to Bologna, this is the tour I'll be taking.

Tasty treats with historical cultural tidbits

Though fairly expensive, the tour is worth its money. Giacomo, our guide, was knowledgeable, entertaining and organised. He introduced the international group of 16 tourists (from GB, the USA, France, Germany and Singapore of fairly mixed ages) to basic historical and cultural facts, interspersed with anecdotes of Bologna. The chocolate tasting came first, then the primi piatti in a delicatessen with a meat and cheese platter of regional specialities, aceto balsamico and a glass of wine. Tables had been set and there was loads to eat in a hospitable and relaxed atmosphere. Next came the main course, secondi piatti, i.e. pasta. At a large communal table typically Bolognese hand-made pasta were served, really delicious. Next stop was another delicatessen with sweets and desserts, and finally a visit to a gelateria for super ice cream. Giacomo explained everything patiently and managed to transfer his enthusiasm about Bologna food onto the group. A recommendable tour.
