  • Learn about the pirates that plied the waters around the Virgin Islands
  • Hear stories about folklore, ghosts, shipwrecks, and more
Full description
St. Thomas is steeped in pirate history, ghost stories, and folklore. Depart from the Mangrove Lagoon Marina and board a two-person kayak as you watch the sun dip down toward the horizon. Paddle through the winding waterways through the mangrove trees and hear spooky pirate and ghost stories. Enjoy the starlit sky as you look for stingrays, tarpon, and other marine life in the dark waters below your kayak. And keep your eyes peeled for flocks of birds returning to nest in their roosts with the setting sun. During several stops along the way your guide will take you back to the times when pirates, ghosts and jumbies (spirits of Caribbean folklore) roamed the islands. Your spine shivers as you hear the tales of some of the area's most famous pirates. From Blackbeard, Bluebeard, and Teach, prepare for a spooky experience when you kayak along the dark waters of the Mangrove Lagoon and hear tales of shipwrecks and the eerie legends that haunt the islands to this day—some of them are more than just a memory from the past. While passing the deserted and eerie Cas Cay, be sure not to pick up any spirit hitchhikers.

Meeting point

Meet at the Mangrove Lagoon Marina 15 minutes prior to your tour. The marina is located on the southeast side of Saint Thomas. Look for the big green trailer with the mask and snorkel on the side. From town, take route 30 east until it intersects with route 32 (also the Bridge to Nowhere/Esso Station), turn right and the meeting point is located on the right side of the road. From Red Hook, head southwest on route 32 towards town and look for the meeting point on the left side of the road.

The people that we got the chance to interact with were a lot of fun, but the overall experience of the actual kayaking was average. It would've been a lot more fun if we didn't have issues with headlamps dying or being able to actually see into the water since it was so clear and see the animals that we were getting to talk to you about. It was really nice that they provided water for everyone to drink and a little candy along the way, it was definitely peaceful but a smaller group but would have been nicer
