Full description

Spend a day in the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound, located in the heart of Fiordland National Park and three times longer than Milford Sound. Self-drive to Manapouri and board a cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri, followed by a bus trip across Wilmot Pass. Stop en route to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest. At Deep Cove, board the Patea Explorer, a purpose-built catamaran, for a 2-hour and 45-minute cruise on Doubtful Sound. See waterfalls, rainforests, and mountains during the cruise. You might spot the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, the colony of fur seals at the mouth of the fiord, or even rare Fiordland crested penguins. During the cruise, knowledgeable nature guides will provide informative commentary.  When it rains in Fiordland, the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains, and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on board the bus or vessel, this landscape is spectacular.

Be prepared for rainfall during your visit. Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain. At the end of your tour, be returned to the departure point.

An excellent experience all round. From the smooth check in at 7 am, the informative skipper from Manapouri, the hilarious and informative bus driver guide, Ram. That was all before we were taken on the extensive tour of Doubtful Sounds. The crew and skipper were great and Alex, the nature guy, was the icing on the cake. As well as the stunning scenery we were lucky to see dolphins, seals&pups, and seabirds on a rare clear blue day. A really great trip and home by 2.30 pm.

My husband and I had a great time! The scenery we saw on the tour was stunning! The boats and buses we were on throughout the tour were very nice (there was space both inside and outside the boats for tourists to be, depending on their preference), the food/drinks were very good, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable…I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Given the chance, I would absolutely take the tour again!

Fabulous day out. Well worth the extra early start to the day. It was a real adventure and we felt like we were seeing something that is exceptionally beautiful. The highlights were the rain forest, the quiet time without the boat motor running and hearing the water and the birds. The icing on the cake were the bottlenosed dolphins jumping in the wake of the boat - fabulous day.
