The Citadel of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) is one of Islamic Cairo’s most iconic landmarks and a remarkable example of medieval military architecture. Strategically perched on the Muqattam Hills, the Citadel offered an unparalleled defensive position and continues to provide breathtaking panoramic views of Cairo. Construction of the fortress began in 1176 AD (572 AH) under the orders of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi but was completed during the reign of Sultan al-Kamel ibn al-Adel in 1207 AD (604 AH). Sultan al-Kamel made it the official residence of Egypt's rulers, a role it maintained until the mid-19th century when Khedive Ismail relocated the official residence to Abdeen Palace in downtown Cairo. The Citadel has witnessed pivotal moments in Egypt’s history, from its construction through the era of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, which ended with the 1952 revolution and the birth of the modern Egyptian republic. Over the centuries, various rulers added significant structures, making the Citadel a must-visit destination. Key attractions include the stunning Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, which dominates the skyline, the Mamluk-era Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, and the Ottoman-era Sulayman Pasha al-Khadim Mosque. The guide Osama was superb. He gave the right amount of detail and welcomed questions. The pickup at the hotel was punctual and the driver excellent. Osama communicated clearly, structuring his information to make it easy to understand. He was interesting and pointed out many things I would have missed without him. He made sure I had water and was comfortable. I give him 100% for all aspects of this tour. When I return will certainly ask for him as a guide next time. There were no problems at all.

The mosque is really beautiful, but you can't see much of it from the citadel.
