Experience

Highlights
  • Experience the deep blue ice formations of Europe´s largest glacier at Vatnajökull
  • Hunt down the newest ice caves with a local guide
  • Enjoy the stunning glacial surroundings of the ice cave
Full description

Meet at the Café by Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, about 40 minutes east of Skaftafell, for the start of a unique winter activity and look at an extraordinary natural phenomenon. Go inside some of the ice caves that form after water runs beneath the Vatnajökull Glacier during the summer. Every fall, local guides hunt for new ice caves, as their location can change each year. The structure and condition can also vary from year to year, but rest assured your guide will decide which is the best cave to visit, depending on the safety and weather conditions. Drive for approximately 20 to 30 minutes to the ice cave chosen by your guide, and then walk for 5 to 15 minutes to the mouth of the cave. Upon arrival, enjoy between 1 and 1.5 hours to look inside at the miraculous blue ice of the cave, and take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area.

The ice cave tour was great! It was a lot more driving and walking to the cave than I had expected but our guide was so fun and made the whole process interesting! I will say that it was really hard to locate them at the lagoon because they don't have signs on their van. The company was called glacier mice and they wore orange and grey jackets, so look for them towards the back end of the parking lot (towards the highway). Definitely felt like it was very accessible for people of various fitness levels. I'm not very fit but I felt very comfortable with the hike (more like an uneven walk) to the cave and getting in and out of the cave was fine as well. Would recommend!!

The cave was a unique and fascinating experience - however the nature of it was that we were shown into a confined space with a lot of people present and the primary focus seemed to be to take photos which personally I would prefer is regarded as secondary to the experience itself. Despite that the intense blue colour is not as intense as the advertisements convey and is probably the result of some minor photo editing. The caves themselves are always changing and therefore the experience may be affected by the fact that we went early in the season in September. The guide was very good and gave us interesting background facts on the glacier.

Hiking over the glacier and down into the ice cave we a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget. Although a little leery on the ice the crampons made the hiking a breeze. The cave was amazing and my daughter said “it looks like you’re inside a wave!” I guess technically I was. I went on the 4pm trip which is quieter than earlier ones as not as many tours that late. Highly recommended
