Full description

This vaults tour takes you beneath the streets of Edinburgh's Old Town into a dimly lit space that many considered to be haunted. Your 1-hour tour visits the vaults of the South Bridge that date back to the 1700s.

These are the same vaults mentioned on Most Haunted Live as one of the scariest places on earth. Learn how the vaults have been used over the years, and the living conditions endured by the poor and homeless residents who frequented them.

The darker side of Edinburgh's history will unfold as you wander through the candle-lit underground area. From your costumed guide, you'll hear about the Burke and Hare murders and the persecution of witches.

Discover the characters who stalked the streets of Edinburgh, and the paranormal stories associated with the vaults. The Haunted Vaults tour option will cover more paranormal and ghost stories. You will also visit our torture exhibition, to explore how and why these items were used.

Welcoming & friendly guide. Super storytelling throughout providing facts and interesting social history. Hints of contents of other tours too to spark interest. Start point a bit tricky to find as partly obscured by scaffolding of Bank of Scotland. Best marker is opposite the pub on the corner as in booking details. Flat shoes a must have.

We thought that as a walking tour it was easy for able bodied people but for those with difficulties it would be more of a challenge, especially the large step at the entrance. The tour was informative although dramatised (which it has to be) but made us think twice about places of note in Edinburgh which we have walked over or past many times without giving the a second thought. All in all an enjoyable experience.

It was very informative, the only reason for not giving it a five star is because there was no notice that there would be no lighting on stairs. As soon as the torch was turned the other direction, we couldn’t see anything at all. One of the members of our group needs to be able to see to maintain balance, so it was dangerous for him. Had we been provided (or sold) torches, we would have truly embraced the dark and horrific history of the vaults. It was a deeply disturbing tour that left me feeling safer with the serial killers than the court ordered torturers, because at least they were quick about their business.
