Full description

Discover Rome's hidden layers of history beneath its streets. Travel by an air-conditioned coach and use skip-the-line access directly into three fascinating archaeological finds. Visit the hallowed catacombs where, beneath their persecutors’ feet, early Christians practiced their forbidden faith. Almost 2,000 years ago, this network of secret tunnels doubled as a place of worship and burial ground. As you explore tombs made of solid rock, your local expert guide will describe the intriguing history of this sacred spot.

Next, travel to Basilica of San Martino ai Monti. Dating back to the 4th century, this church is located near the edge of the Parco del Colle Oppio. Admire the stunning frescoes by artists such as Pietro Testa, Matteo Riccione, and Giannangiolo Canini that adorn the church walls, and see the Chapel of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. Finally, visit the Capuchin Crypt. Capuchin monks used the bones of their nearly 4,000 brothers to intricately decorate the floor-to-ceiling designs, lending it the macabre nickname of "the Bone Chapel." Your guide will tell you the theories, but ultimately you will decide on the meaning of the crypt’s robed skeletons and vertebrae chandeliers. Open your eyes to the city’s hidden side – and you’ll never see Rome the same way again.

First impression upon arrival: “oh my god, Dave Grohl is our tour guide?!” But seriously, Jon (John?) was awesome, we had such a good time! Went on this tour anticipating bones and we were given an insightful history lesson and a sparked interest in Capuchin Monks and history. All 3 locations were amazing, really gives you an appreciation for the different avenues of Roman history you can explore. Took my mother on this tour (and crypts aren’t exactly something she prioritized on our itinerary in Rome) and we were both impressed and appreciative of the historical information shared. Definitely a must for anything off the beaten path you can do in Rome.

Sam and Heather are highly intelligent and comedic guides allowing for a fun trip for all. The use of multiple historical sites was very pleasant with guides offering large amounts of information which sticks easily as they use many analogies and humour to help us remember. The pope of lasagna church was a very kind figure and gave off cute energy, there’s a surprisingly interesting fact about the pope that I won’t spoil. Thank you for the amazing tour, and to heather (my groups tour guide) the other team only won coz they had a super nerd w a super brain, dream team for the win. Also, please pray arsenal finish first this season, sorry I couldn’t show you my photo w Thierry Henry but I do have one from years ago :)
