From Bilbao: Gaztelugatxe, Gernika, and Mundaka Group Tour

1. From Bilbao: Gaztelugatxe, Gernika, and Mundaka Group Tour

The estuary of the Urdaibai River has many attractions that can be enjoyed in a short trip from Bilbao. The hermitage of Gaztelugatxe, which was the set for Dragonstone in the Game of Thrones series, is a good starting point. Whilst there, enjoy the sea views in contrast to the towering nearby mountain. Take your time and climb up the 241 stairs which take you to the top of Gaztelugatxe, where you can ring the bell three times according to tradition. Following that, the coastal town of Mundaka allows you to see firsthand how old fishing traditions are still maintained in the present day. You then travel from Mundaka to reach Gernika, where rural and agricultural traditions are mixed with their varied histories. Gernika is an important reference town in Basque history, being home to the ancient tree where the medieval kings of Spain swore to respect local laws. It is also where the German bombing took place during the Spanish Civil War, destroying much of the city. At the conclusion of your experience, your driver returns you back to Bilbao.

From San Sebastian: Rioja Region Uncorked

4. From San Sebastian: Rioja Region Uncorked

"Cursed wine is better than blessed water," goes an old Spanish saying. On this tour, Ikusnahi will take you after the ‘blessed wine’ from the most famous wine region in Spain. We’ll visit four wineries that will show us four radically different ways of making wine: from Tempranillos aged in barrels hidden in humid caves to young and daring wines. Rioja is also one of the northernmost producers in Spain of the country’s liquid gold: olive oil. Of course, you’ll try it. Three countries (in one) Rioja is located on the banks of the legendary river Ebro, the longest river in Spain, 90 minutes from San Sebastián. You have to go by van, but you won’t be bored: we’ll cross three of the most emblematic Spanish landscapes: the green and mountainous forests of Euskadi, the flat dry fields (yellow or green, depending on the time of year) typical of Castile, and the large expanses of vineyards on the gentle hills of Rioja. Three countries for the price of one. Winectionary Malolactic fermentation? Protected Designation of Origin? Young, Reserve or Great Reserve? Vintage? Pituitary? Do any of these words sound familiar to you? Probably not. When the tour ends, if the vapors of the wine allow, you’ll know the meanings of all of them. Rioja is such a rich wine region that it includes many types of wineries: there are classic ones with legendary vintages (we’ll visit them, we’ll taste them); there are small, family-run bodegas who take risks with young and daring wines (we’ll visit and taste them, too); and there are centuries-old wineries, devoted to a traditional wine: is it necessary to say that we will also visit and taste them? The Place Haro is the wine capital of northern Spain. This is where the French went in desperation in the 19th century, when phylloxera devastated their vineyards and the country was left without grapes. It was then that they began to take a chance on developing a quality wine industry in the region. One hundred-plus years later, they’ve succeeded. And wow, have they succeeded. Medieval titanium Rioja is not only wine, wine and wine, but also a territory extraordinarily rich in historical heritage. We’ll see medieval towns such as Laguardia, with baroque churches (full of gold, virgins and cherubs, inherited from the Spanish Counter-Reformation) alongside the latest “cathedrals “ of wine, such as the Marqués de Riscal wineries by Frank O. Gehry (which uses the same titanium as the Guggenheim Bilbao museum), and the Bodegas Ysios by Santiago Calatrava.

Getxo and Vizcaya Bridge From Bilbao

5. Getxo and Vizcaya Bridge From Bilbao

During the 19th century the region of Bilbao experienced a huge industralisation development that led to two very different social classes: working class and bankers. Each one laid on river Nervion's West and East banks, and both areas developed their own way. This tour will take you to learn about the Bizkaia bridge, built in late 19th century as a representation of the iron industry in the area, and the link of both river banks. On the left side there lies the medieval village of Portugalete, with steep and narrow streets and Camino de Santiago routes. On the right side, you will discover Getxo, with all her different areas: from majestic Las Arenas and exclusive palaces of Neguri to the charming centuries-old houses of the Old Port in Algorta and the astonishing views from the cliffs of Punta Galea. The estuary of river Ibaizabal, coming from Bilbao, has many secrets ready to be discovered. Do not miss this chance of seeing all of them!

From San Sebastian: Guggenheim and Basque Coast Day Trip

8. From San Sebastian: Guggenheim and Basque Coast Day Trip

A day trip in a van through back roads of the Basque coast, visiting historic town and unique natural landscapes, ending up in the most cosmopolitan city in the Basque Country. The road has curves (a few) but there will be plenty of stops to breathe the sea air and contemplate the horizon. The French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: “Gernika is the happiest town in the world. Their affairs are governed by a board of peasants that meets under an oak tree and always makes the fairest decisions ”. And here we go, to the city bombed by Nazi planes in 1937 that inspired one of the most well-known paintings in the world, Picasso’s mural-sized “Guernica”. We will visit the city and, of course, the tree under which the (we hope) “fairer decisions” are made. Memorize this name: ‘Urdaibai’ and try to pronounce it well (it’s not easy, we know) because you won’t forget it. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, Urdaibai is a large estuary at which mountains, rivers, the sea and large stretches of sand come together. Depending on the tide and time of day, the landscape (and the dozens of birds that inhabit it) may be radically different. We’ll also stop at Mundaka, a hot spot on the world's ‘surfaris’ routes: its beach has one of the most (possibly the most) perfect waves on the planet, with a left-hand break. Some call it “Dragonstone,” but its name is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the ground by a line of 241 stairs and crowned by a hermitage. Gaztelugatxe became ultra-famous after appearing in the Games Of Thrones series disguised as Dragonstone: Though the 'castle' is a cgi effect, everything else (dizzying cliffs, sharp rocks, flocks of birds, the noise of the sea ...) is rabidly real . The people of Bilbao have always claimed that their city was the capital of the world. When the Guggenheim museum opened in 1997, that prophecy came true and the building became an architectural phenomenon whose influence has spilled over into the rest of the city. The people of Bilbao say that the museum is actually the “doghouse” of Puppy, the iconic statue that welcomes you at the entrance (Basque ironic mode on). We’ll get to know the building and its main works of contemporary art.

Daniel was a great guide - friendly, knowledgeable and informative. He was very flexible in terms of what we did tailoring it to what we wanted. We had a good walk around the old town in Bilbao and the market and then the Guggenheim which was the highlight. I would allow a minimum of a couple hours at the Guggenheim

Iker is a superb guide and an excellent driver. He has great knowledge of both the history of the region, the architecture and contents of the Guggenheim museum and the nooks and crannies of Bilbao. I would heartily recommend him and hope to travel back to San Sebastián and use his services again!

Ernes møtte til avtalt tid. Utrolig hyggelig og kunnskapsrik. Har hatt en fantastisk dag, hvor jeg har lært mye om baskisk historie og kultur.
