Bali: Tulamben Bay and the USAT Liberty Wreck Dive

Bali: Tulamben Bay and the USAT Liberty Wreck Dive

Following pick-up from your hotel, journey to the village of Tulamben on the north-east coast of Bali, best known for its black beach covered with smooth, fist-size rocks. Upon arrival, head to Tulamben Bay to take part in a wreck dive and get close to the World War II cargo ship, the USAT Liberty. Located just 30 meters from the beach, the wreck measures an impressive 120 meters on a steeply sloping sandy bottom, with its top just 3 meters below the water surface. Sunk by torpedoes on January 11, 1942, the USAT Liberty was carrying rubber and railroad parts for war service across the Lombok Strait. The damage was critical, but 2 destroyers hitched her up and tried to tow her to the port at Singaraja. She was taking too much water, so the crew decided to run her up on the beach at Tulamben. The volcanic explosion of Gunung Agung in 1963 rolled her off the beach to the present location, breaking her in pieces along the way. Now completely covered with corals and home to hundreds of species of fish, the wreck is submerged to a maximum depth of 29 meters. Considered one of the best beach entry dive sites in Bali, the wreck of the USAT Liberty is just for starters! A 15-minute journey further east takes you to the Alamanda Reef and Batu Kelebit Reef. Travel by car 10 minutes west from Tulamben and you reach the village of Kubu, where access to the pristine Kubu Reef is easy. Night diving is especially popular, with an average visibility of 15 to 20 meters and water temperatures around 28 to 29 degrees Celsius. Join this diving adventure for a fantastic day in a unique area and get up close to the magnificent marine life along the way! Please note, this tour is only available to certified divers.

Great all-in-one package if you want to see East Java and then go to Bali. - Guide at Tempuk waterfall takes really beautiful pictures (included), the guides also take beautiful photos for you at Ijen and Bromo - Driver very helpful - 4x4 jeep to Bromo, over 1 hour long drive - Hostel at Ijen very well maintained and reception courteous Warning: You get practically zero sleep in the 3 days, see pickup times. At the same time, a lot of exercise, you climb up Ijen and to Tempuk waterfall yourself, even at Bromo there is a good bit of walking to do after the jeep ride. Be aware of this, stock up on snacks beforehand, or bottled coffee, which you can drink on the long car journeys. Get a good night's sleep beforehand and chill out a bit in Bali afterwards, you will be exhausted, even as young, fit people. But you will have lots of great memories! P.S. Sunrises and Blue Fire at Ijen are very dependent on the weather, you won't see any of it because of the rain

it was a really great opportunity to see so many sites in a single day. our guide Abdi was very flexible and insightful. he took our requests to visit certain waterfall and temple sites and made a plan which was most efficient. he was also very attentive providing us with water and brought an umbrella when it began to rain midway into one site visit. in addition he was great at taking some photos of us for our memories of the day. we really recommend Abdi and had a wonderful time and were able to experience so many beautiful places.

It was really nice, everything went perfect for us but I realised later that you can easily book the tours trough local hostels for less. Be prepared to not sleep much. It is a tight schedule. Still worth it of course.

The activity was pretty good, diving twice during the day for about 40’ each. I recommend to hire GoPro to have picture and videos

everything was well organized, everything worked out well. Great value for your money, super sites.
