Travel part way up Queenstown Hill for a bird's-eye view onto Deer Park Heights, which was used for the refugees of Rohan and the Battle of the Wargs scenes. From the viewpoint, head to Kawarau Gorge where the filming took place for the Argonath - 'Pillars of the Kings'. After Kawarau Gorge, travel to Arrowtown where the loss of The One Ring scene at Gladden Fields was shot. Near Arrowtown, you will experience a true off-road adventure. Following a historic gold mining road up the Arrow River, cross the river many times to get to the Ford of Bruinen. Here you can indulge in a refreshing afternoon tea and try your hand at a spot of gold panning. From Arrowtown, travel to the entrance of Skippers Canyon for spectacular panoramic views of the Wakatipu Basin and into the Canyon. Head out on a 25 minute shuttle from Around The Basin’s shop to Arrowtown. Once there, you will be provided with all of the tools you need for this self-guided adventure ride: a quality mountain bike or E-bike with a helmet; a detailed briefing to explain the route; and our trail map to help with navigation. There’s the opportunity to explore Arrowtown – once a historic settlement built during the Gold Rush era – or grab a coffee to help fuel your day. The route starts by following the Arrow River Trail downstream to the Morven Ferry, crossing the river via a few spectacular bridges. From there you’ll join the Twin Rivers Trail, which follows the Kawarau and Shotover rivers to the shores of Lake Whakatipu. Expect to see incredible alpine views throughout this section as you traverse the foothills of The Remarkables mountains. Even the Old Shotover Bridge, which has spanned the river for more than a century, provides outstanding views of two ski areas. The last stage of the journey is a gentle, flowing trail along the lake’s edge, passing a few cafés and even a brewery, before the finish line back in central Queenstown. This ride is on wide gravel trails, graded either 2 or 3 (as shown in the images above). The minimum riding distance is 35 km with a few decent hills. It is recommended for those who are confident riders with a good level of fitness. E-bike upgrades are recommended for this ride.

This half-day ride package starts with a 25 minute shuttle from Around The Basin’s shop in Queenstown out to Arrowtown, one of the most scenic towns in New Zealand. We’ll get you sorted with everything you need before you ride the most popular section of the Queenstown Trail network. The 15km trail from Arrowtown meanders along the banks of the Arrow and Kawarau rivers. It crosses the rivers via six bridges – including three suspension bridges – and follows the original path used by the gold-miners of the 1800’s. The spectacular river gorges and glacially-carved landscapes provide plenty of photo opportunities. Once passed the Kawarau Bungy-Jump Bridge, the trail opens up to the majestic Gibbston Wine Valley. The first cellar door in the valley is only a short ride further on. You’ll have time to sample what this world-class wine region has to offer before your return shuttle back to Queenstown. This ride is easy mountain biking on wide, gravel trails. The trail undulates beside the rivers with a lot of small ‘bumps’, though there are fewer ‘ups’ than there are ‘downs’, as you will be heading downstream. It’s suitable for all riding abilities and a great option for families.

Your journey through Middle Earth starts from the station information centre on Camp Street at 8:00AM or 1:30PM.  From there you will travel to the top of Skippers Canyon and to Arrowtown, once rich gold mining locations, and you will learn about the history of the area.  We will check out The Ford of Bruinen, where the Black Riders challenge Arwen and are swept down the river, and then onto the Gladden Fields where Isildur was ambushed by Orcs and where the One Ring was lost.  From Arrowtown you will travel towards the Kawarau river where you will see The Argonath (The Pillars of the King).  Then its time for some fun handling and photographing weapons, such as Gimli's axe, Anduril and Sting.  After spending time reenacting scenes with the weapons there will be one last lookout stop where we will point out more locations of Rohan and Gondor before heading back to Queenstown.

Starting from Central Queenstown, you will be collected by your Altitude Tours guide in a premium Mercedes vehicle and set off on a fantastic morning exploring the local sights. Throughout the tour, your guide will provide informative and entertaining commentary along with great Kiwi humor. Our first stop is an observation point right above Queenstown where you will get the best panoramic views of the city. Then drive through the gorgeous countryside below Coronet Peak to Arrowtown, a quaint, little gold mining village nestled below the mountains alongside a river full of gold. On your way pass over the renowned Shotover River catching a glimpse of the legendary Shotover Jetboat. Head to the next stop, a local cellar door where you can sample delicious, award-winning wines and enjoy shared cheeseboards (non-alcoholic options are available). You will then head back to Queenstown where you will finish off your day with a relaxing 30-minute scenic boat cruise on Lake Wakatipu.
