Insider tips: Planning a trip to Las Vegas

What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but planning your trip should start early to ensure you don't miss any of the excitement of Sin City. So you can make the most of your trip, we've enlisted the help of destination experts Mayuri & Salil from ToSomePlaceNew. Read below for their valuable tips on what to experience when you visit Las Vegas.

What should I do on my first trip to Las Vegas?

If this is your first-ever trip to Las Vegas, I highly recommend taking a stroll at the Las Vegas Strip. This is one activity that you cannot experience in any other U.S. city. As you stroll from one end of the Strip to another, you will be mesmerized by the architectural wonders, and the world landmarks and replicas will leave you spellbound!

What are some hidden gems to see in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is seldom known for its museums. And that’s why I think it is one of those unique/underrated activities that you must consider doing on your trip to Vegas. My favorites - Mob Museum (this is an interesting place showcasing exhibits of organized crimes), and the Neon Museum (a fun place to explore electric and bright neon signs collected from various places).

If you like to venture outside the city, I recommend the Seven Magic Mountains, which highlights 35 feet high neon rock installations outdoors. And they are perfect for Instagrammable photos. It is located about a 20-minute drive from the Strip.

How much time should I spend in Las Vegas?

Ideally, 2 days in Las Vegas is perfect to explore all of the city highlights. This includes a sightseeing tour of the Strip, shopping, and live show on day one, followed by a visit to the Downtown neighborhood (Fremont experience), and activity of your choice - go-karting, half-day tour to Red Rock Canyon, or once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon ride over the city.

What food is Las Vegas known for?

Although Las Vegas doesn’t have an official dish, you will be amazed by the plethora of Michelin Stars restaurants, and world-class chefs showcasing their best culinary delights. One of the must-try food items in Vegas is Sage Fried Chicken & Waffles (at Hash House A GoGo) or Chicken, Watermelon & Waffles (at the YardBird) - their take on waffles is wild!

What neighborhood should I stay in when I visit Las Vegas?

Hands down, Las Vegas Strip! The Strip has all major attractions, fancy and budget accommodation, and food options that you won’t be disappointed in here. The hotel properties are landmarks in themselves, and with so many free things to do at the Strip, it will make your visit memorable. Plus most sightseeing tours (to Red Rock, Grand Canyon & more) offer pick up and drop off from major Las Vegas Strip hotels.

What is the best way to get around Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is best explored on foot. You can explore/walk the entire Strip in about 45 minutes (without stopping by). For exploring further areas like downtown or the outlet malls, a car or taxi is the best option. Public transportation (trains) are available but they take longer to arrive, as compared to a car ride. Downtown Las Vegas from the Strip is about a 10-minute drive, and trains take 40-45 minutes (one way).

What are the best months to visit Las Vegas?

Spring and late fall months are the best time to visit Las Vegas. During this time, the weather is mild which makes outdoor exploration - comfortable. Plus there are a ton of festivals that you can participate in. If I were to pick a season, I did say go with fall (September to November). Vegas holds a number of events in these months, starting with the Greek Food Festival and the Rock and Roll Marathon in November.

What are the best neighborhoods for food?

The Strip is the place to be - for epic restaurants and culinary options. You will easily find fine dining, modest restaurants to fast food chains here - something for every budget. You can also add special/celebratory dinners at a variety of upscale restaurants, featuring cuisines from all over the world!

What are the best neighborhoods for shopping?

For luxury shopping at the Strip - visit the Forum Shops (at Caesars Palace) or Grand Canal Shoppes (at the Venetian). You will love the ambiance at these two places as you shop along. If you are looking to score a deal with luxury brands (like Armani, Burberry, DKNY, etc.) head to the Las Vegas North Premium Outlets - you can save anywhere from 30 to 60% off retail prices here.
