Insider tips: Planning a trip to Jungfraujoch

Jurga Rubinovaite is an avid traveler, photographer, and chief adventure planner behind the popular family travel blog Full Suitcase. On her blog, you can find more information and all the details for planning a trip to Jungfraujoch.

What should I do on my first trip to Jungfraujoch?

When visiting Jungfaujoch - Top of Europe, you really should do everything that's available/ open. Absolute musts are the Sphinx Observation Deck with amazing views of Aletsch Glacier, Ice Palace, and Glacier Plateau. Alpine Sensation and Jungfrau Panorama film experience are also great and can be done the whole year round. If visiting in summer, you can also do some snow tubing or hike to Mönchsjoch Hut.

What are some nice things to do nearby?

Traveling to Jungfraujoch by train, you'll pass some amazing places nearby. Be sure to visit Kleine Scheidegg and either Wengen or Grindelwald towns. In summer, you could also do some hiking in the area. One of the most famous hikes is Eiger North Face Trail. Less challenging and probably even more rewarding is the Panorama Trail between Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen.

How much time should I spend in Jungfraujoch?

Count at least 2-3 hours for the experiences at Jungfraujoch (more if you have lunch at the restaurant, go hiking, or similar). However, the journey to Jungfraujoch by train also takes a long time and you'll also want to visit some places along the way, so you should plan an entire day for your visit to Jungfraujoch.

What are the best months to visit Jungfraujoch?

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe is a year-round destination and offers a wonderful experience at any time of the year. At an elevation of 3.454 m (over 11.000 ft), there is always snow at the top. In summer, you can take a hike to Mönchsjoch Hut or enjoy some activities at the Snow Park, so there's a bit more to do at Jungfraujoch than in winter. But the views and all the other experiences are great in any season. Also on a rainy day, you're often above the clouds here, which can be a very unique experience in itself.

What neighborhood should I stay in when I visit Jungfraujoch?

Most people visit Jungfraujoch as a day trip from one of the bigger towns in Switzerland, so you don't absolutely have to stay nearby. However, if you have a few days extra, we highly recommend staying in Wengen or in Grindelwald and taking the time to explore this beautiful part of the Bernese Oberland region deeper.

What are the best areas for outdoor activities around Jungfraujoch?

There are countless opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities near Jungfraujoch. In winter, you can go skiing in the Wengen - Männlichen - Grindelwald area. And in summer, there are countless hiking possibilities around Kleine Scheidegg, which is the train station where you board the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch. So since you are stopping here anyway, it's one of the best areas to do some hiking as well. The nearby Grindelwald-First area is an outdoor destination in itself, but - ideally - you plan a separate day for it.

Our trip today was amazing! Pedro and Ping were our tours guides and they couldn’t have been better, Pedro was very clear when he spoke and gave good instructions and made sure everyone understood what was happening. He was funny and full of energy which makes a fantastic tour guide! I highly recommend

Fun trip with amazing guide Monica. While Jungfraujoch may not be the tallest Mt in Switzerland, the sights and experiences at the ‘Top of Europe’ were highlights of our holiday.
