Rome airport transfers: Everything you need to know

A city known for its historical architecture, Italian delicacies, and beautiful landscapes, Rome is said to have something for everyone. The region has many types of public transportation that travelers can use, including the subway, buses, streetcars, regional trains, and trams. Although they can be used to travel to one of the city’s two airports, it’s usually easier to sit back, relax, and have a transfer pick you up directly from your door. Doing this will save you the burden of having to lug your suitcases through Italy’s capital.

Can I use a Rome airport transfer to go to both of the city’s airports?

Rome has two airports in its vicinity, Fiumicino - Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino, both of which can be reached by transfer services. Fiumicino is considered to be Rome’s primary international airport, and it services many of the flights coming from overseas. If you're going between this airport and downtown Rome via car, you can expect for it to take you about 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Ciampino Airport is a smaller choice and is known for servicing many domestic flights, as well as flights that are run by budget airlines. It is a bit closer to Rome’s city center, so it will take you about 35 to 40 minutes to travel between the two locations by car.

How much should I expect to pay for an airport transfer service?

While prices vary depending on what type of shuttle you reserve and where exactly you will be traveling from, you can expect to pay somewhere between 10€ and 25€ (approximately $11-$27) for a standard shared transfer if you are traveling out of Fiumicino. When traveling through Ciampino Airport, the fare will be closer to 5 to 15€ per person (approximately $5.50-$16).

What type of airport transfers are offered in Rome?

Depending on how much you are willing to spend and what kind of time crunch you are under, there are many different Rome airport transfers to choose from. The cheapest option is a shared bus, which generally departs from Termini Station, as it is a central location in the city’s downtown. It is possible to book a transfer that will pick you up directly from your hotel, an option that is convenient for those that don’t want to take public transportation or pack a lot of luggage. If you’re traveling with a group of people and are interested in a private vehicle, you can always rent a large private car or van to drive you to the airport. While this tends to be the most expensive option, it is the quickest and most comfortable, giving you extra time to explore the city and an added level of comfort.

Which airport in Rome is most convenient for an airport transfer?

Rome’s public transportation does not take you directly to the different terminals in Fiumicino, which can sometimes be confusing for those that do not know the airport well. If you want to avoid getting lost and have transportation that will deliver you directly to your gate, the most convenient option is to book yourself a private airport shuttle. On the other hand, Ciampino Airport is a smaller choice that does not have nearly as many terminals. However, because it is not a major travel hub, it isn’t particularly well-linked with public transportation. To avoid the stress and hassle of dealing with trains, transfers are a good option.

When should I book my Rome airport transfer?

Because the Fiumicino Airport is the biggest travel hub in the region, it might take you some time to check in to your flight and go through security. Play it safe and have your Rome airport transfer bring you there about two hours before your flight takes off. The airport in Ciampino is much smaller, so you won’t have to worry about dealing with crowds. While you don’t need to worry about getting there too far ahead of time, you will want to book your trip well in advance, as airport transfers are a popular mode of transportation for getting to this airport.

Super easy transfer, highly recommend. The instructions as to where to meet the bus were detailed and way to follow. I loved having wifi on the bus since I didn’t have data. However, the bus driver didn’t provide very clear explanations when making stops & which was next.
